The Chair of the Department of Medical Education at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine will function as a leader, both by example and personal engagement, in driving the innovative, educational, and scholarly research functions of the department. The Chair will have primary responsibility for the overall direction, operation, and management of the department. The Chair will guide the academic advancement of department faculty and the professional development of department staff. The Chair will be committed to the principle that a diverse and inclusive community of students, staff, and faculty enhances our mission to empower learners to transform lives, and inspires them to serve our global community.
The position will require thoughtful strategic planning and the ability to lead and garner support for new and innovative educational initiatives. Consistent with this requisite attribute, the candidate will be knowledgeable about the changing landscape in medical education and have demonstrated the ability to lead organizational change to support innovative educational initiatives.


Experience with outcomes-based education and integration of assessment methods into curricular design will be essential, as well as possession of a clear vision of how we can leverage information technology to support teaching. An individual, who is highly organized, understands organizational structure, demonstrates effective delegation, and sets clear expectations for faculty and staff will prove successful in this position. Foremost, the successful candidate will strive to carry forth the educational mission while being an effective and collaborative leader with colleagues, faculty and, most importantly, to students.


The Miller School of Medicine desires to be at the forefront of innovation in medical education, which includes early clinical involvement for students, interactive learning modules with a core of dedicated teaching faculty, and the integration of health care delivery science and social determinants of health into the MD curriculum. The Chair will work closely with the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and educational bodies of the school to implement an innovative UME curriculum for the next generation of physician graduates. This evolving curriculum is committed to creating physicians with an integrated and complete foundation of the scientific basis of medicine who can also communicate effectively with broad audiences, and expertly navigate the cultural, social, political, and economic contexts that influence science and health.  


Successful candidates must have a terminal degree (PhD, MD, or equivalent) and meet the criteria for appointment/promotion to the rank of Professor. Successful candidates will have achieved excellence as a scholar in medical education/pedagogy and as an educator, possess a strong record of accomplishment of leadership, program development and personnel management, as well as a strong and sustained record of excellence in disseminated scholarship and in securing sponsored support for relevant programmatic endeavors. Candidates should have at least five years of leadership experience at the departmental, institutional, and/or national levels in organizations with programmatic relevance to this role as Chair of the Department of Medical Education, e.g., national educational, medical or scientific organizations, professional societies and/or private/governmental advisory committees.

Candidate may also be considered for an appropriate decanal appointment.
