Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine invites applications for the position of Chair, Family and Community Medicine.

The Chair will create a unifying vision for a newly combined department, successfully promoting a healthy Nevada. The Academic Chair of Family and Community Medicine reports to the Dean of the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) and the Chief Medical Officer of Renown Medical Group. The Chair of Family and Community Medicine is the administrative and academic leader of the Department of Family and Community Medicine, defining the department’s mission, vision and values and is the clinical leader for Renown Health patient care services The Chair will have the vision and experience to lead an urban academic Department of Family and Community Medicine, to strategically expand care and enhance training in Northern Nevada. The role includes clinical responsibilities as an active family medicine physician and will oversee the Division Chiefs of Primary Care, Urgent Care and Sports Medicine in Renown Medical Group.

The Chair provides leadership grounded in the core values and stated cultural goals of the institutions in all facets of the department’s clinical, teaching, research and diversity missions as well its clinical operations and financial health. The latter two aspects the Chair will execute as a partner with an administrative dyad partner at Renown Health.  The Chair is responsible for:

  • Leading faculty to envision the department’s future through Development and implementation of short- and long-term strategic goals with measurable objectives
  • Resource investment to meet strategic goals
  • Providing oversight of the teaching mission of the department and serving as a resource to educational leaders within the department
  • Providing oversight of the research mission of the department and serving as a resource to research leaders within the department
  • Working collaboratively in a dyadic structure with Renown Administrator of Primary Care, Urgent Care and Sports Medicine for clinical operations resulting in operational efficiency, productivity, and high-quality patient experiences, influencing population health and addressing health care disparities
  • Development of the local, regional, and national reputation of the department
  • Administration of faculty including activities related to faculty recruitment, retention, supervision/evaluation, mentoring/development
  • Serving as a role model by personally maintaining national reputation for excellence and inspiring faculty to excellence in the clinical, research and teaching missions.
  • Being an institutional leader of UNR Med and Renown Health

Required Qualifications

Candidates should hold an MD, DO, MD/PhD, or DO/PhD; academic credentials that qualify for appointment at the level of Professor, board certification in family medicine; eligibility to work in the United States and ability to be licensed in Nevada; and demonstrated skills in forward-thinking, strategic administration of family medicine services. Candidates should have a strong background in academic medicine, including demonstrated excellence in clinical care, medical education, and research, and substantial experience as a physician leader in an academic health center, hospital, or large group practice environment.

Compensation Grade

Academic appointment commensurate with experience plus stipend for duties as Chair.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees
