East Carolina University College of Nursing will be nationally recognized for innovative programs in nursing education and collaborative, interdisciplinary partnerships that improve the way health care is provided in rural underserved communities as well as for research that advances nursing science. Our intent is to improve the health and well-being of citizens in the region and around the world.
The East Carolina University College of Nursing is currently seeking applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Nursing Science. The Department Chairperson is directly responsible to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs in the College of Nursing. The chairperson is responsible for the delivery, implementation and evaluation of the courses and curriculum assigned to that department. The Chairperson is expected to provide leadership to the faculty in the department by facilitating their development and evaluation in teaching effectiveness, research and scholarly activities
Specific responsibilities include:
a) Collaborates with faculty members to determine department priorities.
b) Provides leadership for implementation of the College of Nursing strategic plan and mission at the department level.
c) Collaborates with the Dean, Associate Deans, Directors, and faculty regarding program planning, monitoring curriculum, and evaluation of student outcomes in departmental courses.
d) Provides leadership and serves as a resource for the department faculty.
e) Encourages the career development of faculty.
f) Facilitates faculty research and scholarly activities in the department.
g) Participates in the appointment, tenure and promotion of well-qualified faculty for the department in accordance with appointment, tenure, promotion and advancement policies and procedures in the East Carolina University Faculty Manual.
h) Coordinates an orientation of new faculty.
i) Conducts annual faculty and staff evaluations.
j) Recommends faculty salary increments based on merit, inequity, promotion and tenure.
k) Fosters collegial faculty relations and mediates conflicts among faculty, staff, and students.
l) Collaborates with Student Services, Associate Deans, Department Chairs and Directors as appropriate in preparation of class schedules and clinical site placements.
m) Makes faculty teaching assignments.
n) Advises the appropriate Associate Dean about departmental needs and priorities.
o) Reviews expenditure of travel and educational funds allocated to the department.
p) Manages the departmental office effectively.
q) Teaches selected courses in area of expertise.
r) Participates in scholarly activities and professional services as required by members of University faculty community.
s) Serves as liaison with the community through participating in relevant community groups and responds to community needs relevant to nursing education.
t) Completes other assignments at the request of the Dean and Associate Dean.
Doctorate in Nursing or related field plus a master’s degree in nursing; five years or more teaching experience in baccalaureate or higher degree program in nursing;
demonstrated competence in classroom and clinical instruction; demonstrated ability in research and other scholarly activities;
and demonstrated ability to facilitate the research and scholarly activities of others. Knowledgeable about nursing, nursing education and able to provide leadership for faculty in their development, guide faculty in course development and evaluation of students.
Nursing faculty members shall hold a current unrestricted license as a registered nurse in North Carolina and if employed after July 1, 1992 shall have had a minimum of 2 calendar years prior, full-time employment or the equivalent in clinical nursing practice as a registered nurse.
|License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation||
A valid non-restricted North Carolina registered nurse license is required upon employment.
|Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education||
Administrative experience in a College of Nursing is preferred.
Demonstrated ability in research and other scholarly activities.
Preference will be given to candidates who hold a PhD in Nursing.
