The Institutional Researcher at Claremont Graduate University is a member of the Office of Institutional Research and is responsible for designing and implementing data analyses; maintaining, interpreting and reporting data to internal and external stakeholders; preparing and presenting information to enhance university operations and decision-making.

CGU is a small, private, graduate-only institution and a member of The Claremont Colleges consortium. The Officer reports to the Associate Vice President of Academic Planning and Institutional Effectiveness, and plays an integral role in the assessment and planning process for the University. The regular hours for this position are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. Hours may vary due to needs of the University or department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Data Management: design, collect, maintain and analyze university data. This includes demographic and academic data, survey data (faculty, student, staff), data needed for internal program reviews, strategic planning, CGU committees, and other university needs.

  • Data Transformation: extract and transform existing data sources to create new data sets in order to address existing reporting requirements and address novel business questions.

  • Data Integrity: Ensure data accuracy and consistent reporting via repeatable data cleaning processes and documentation of methods.

  • External reporting: assist in the collection and compilation of data about the university to external stakeholders, including government agencies and accrediting bodies.

  • Institutional support: Respond to requests for data and reports from departments, schools, and administrative offices as needed.

  • Collaboration: work with university administration, faculty, committees, and other internal stakeholders on the interpretation and use of data in support of effective decision-making and institutional effectiveness.

  • Website maintenance: develop and maintain content on the Office of Institutional Effectiveness pages on the CGU web portal and the public website.

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge and Skills:

Individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.


  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Ability to model complex problems and identify methods of data transformation that will yield novel data sets in support of university needs.

  • Ability to transform, analyze and interpret quantitative and qualitative data,

  • Knowledge of data transformation methods and experience with data transformation via programmatic methods (R, Excel, Python, etc.)

  • Knowledge of and experience with databases and student information systems (SQL, PeopleSoft, Slate, etc.).

  • Knowledge of statistics and experience using statistical packages for analyzing datasets (Excel, R, SAS, Stata, etc).

  • Proficiency with visualization software (Tableau, Power BI, or similar)

  • Ability to collect, analyze, and present institutional data for external and internal audiences, ensuring privacy and security of institutional data, and complying with FERPA regulations and the Association for Institutional Research code of ethics.

  • Ability to effectively communicate data findings via documents and oral presentations.

  • Ability to work independently and with a range of departments and personnel, managing and prioritizing multiple projects with the understanding of broader university goals and context of these projects.

Qualification Standards

  • Bachelors degree in statistics, social or behavioral science, or other related field required; master's degree preferred, or any combination of education and experience that provides the required skills and ability. 2+ years of experience in a research analyst/business intelligence role.

  • One or more years' experience in institutional research and planning in higher education is desirable.

  • Proficiency in statistical packages (R, SAS, Stata, etc.)

Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge of PeopleSoft and Tableau. Knowledge of and experience with external higher education institutional reporting agencies, including IPEDS, highly desirable.

Licenses/certificates:

Driver's license, passport, United States Citizen or lawful permanent resident, per the DHS guidelines regarding eligibility to be a DSO.

Hours, Classification, and Status:

This is an exempt position with regular working hours 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Hours may vary due to the needs of the University or department. Evening and weekend hours may occasionally be required. Up to two days per week may be remote work in accordance with the University's remote work policy. This position reports to the (title TBD).
