Position Summary
Provides advanced administrative and technical support to an ophthalmologist in a clinical setting. Gathers important medical information and performs visual screening prior to Ophthalmologist’s visit with patient.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs all duties of the ophthalmic assistant in addition to the duties listed below.
  • Performs kinetic and static fields including automated perimetry.
  • Assists with the clinical work up of patients including a detailed systemic and ocular patient history: past medical history, family medical history, medication history and the chief complaint of the patient.
  • Helps patients understand general office evaluation and physician instructions.
  • Performs refractions, keratometry, tonography and tonometry.
  • Inserts and removes patient contact lenses when necessary; also provides contact lens instruction to patients.
  • Performs BAT (Brightness acuity test) glare testing and PAM (Potential acuity meter) testing.
  • Performs A-Scan ultrasound testing.
  • Ability to use ophthalmic testing equipment, interpret and report results of testing.
  • Sets up for and assists physicians with minor surgical procedures and special procedures.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the eye, medical terminology, abbreviations and pharmacology.
  • Excellent communication and patient care skills.
  • Ability to express a caring attitude while performing tasks required with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Ability to maintain patient information patient information in a strict confidential manner.


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent high school certification.
  • Two to four years of experience in technical aspects of ophthalmology or equivalent training/experience, if a Medical Resident.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician or equivalent training/experience, if a Medical Resident.
  • Basic Life Support certification (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements).

Salary Range
$20.17 - $30.24 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
