Job Description:

The Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management  in the College of Agriculture and Life Science at Iowa State University is seeking applicants for a Research Technician II to help assess invasive carp population ecology in tributaries of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers.

This position will provide technical support to research projects by assisting with the collection of fish in the field and processing samples in the laboratory. The successful candidate will deploy and maintain acoustic telemetry receivers in rivers, tag fish with acoustic transmitters, collect ichthyoplankton and zooplankton samples in the field, and processes a variety of samples (e.g., larval fish, zooplankton, fish aging, fish diets, etc.) in the laboratory.  Position will be responsible for data entry and basic boat and trailer maintenance.

The successful candidate will possess an excellent work ethic, organization skills, interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to meet deadlines. This position requires in-state travel that may include overnight stays. This position requires a valid U.S. Driver's License.

Position duration is one year with the possibility of renewal.

• Performs a variety of tests requiring a high degree of proficiency.
• Collects, analyzes, and processes laboratory samples or research data.
• Troubleshoots problems and recommends solutions.
• Determines testing methods for non-standardized test.
• Cleans, sanitizes, maintains, and operates lab equipment.
• Assists scientists with research and record findings in the field or lab.
• Maintains sample tracking.

• Career-level position demonstrating proficiency and knowledge of related competencies
• Works under direct to general supervision and may receive guidance on more complex assignments
• Follows established procedures for work assignments, and completes assignments which are semi-routine and may be atypical in nature
• Applies thorough knowledge to respond to inquiries and requests
• Able to resolve most problems and issues and respond to requests without escalation
• Provides guidance to students
• May provide supervision to one to two other staff or lead a small work team
