Job Description Summary:
The GW Student Health Center (SHC) at the George Washington University (GW) is a multidisciplinary, integrated, student healthcare service that provides confidential, student-centered care in an accessible, safe, culturally sensitive, and supportive environment. The SHC seeks to promote healthy lifestyle choices and to holistically support the physical and emotional well-being of students in order to achieve academic success.
The SHC is hiring a Certified Medical Assistant to collaborate with our primary care team in providing primary care medical services for undergraduate and graduate students visiting the ambulatory SHC at George Washington University. Responsibilities include:
  • Oversees clinic patient flow. Monitors for patient’s arrival, accompanies and/or assists patient into the exam room in a friendly and professional manner. Informs medical provider of patient’s arrival and room assignment.
  • Obtains patient vital signs, including height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, pulse oximetry, visual acuity, and orthostatic blood pressure.
  • Transcribes vital signs to Point and Click (PnC), the electronic medical record, correctly and in a timely fashion.
  • Takes a focused chief complaint and brief medical history including current medications and allergies.
  • Performs a variety of diagnostic CLIA-waived testing and screening procedures such as:
    • Rapid strep testing
    • Throat culture
    • Flu testing
    • COVID/Flu testing
    • Monospot testing
    • Urinalysis and urine culture
    • Urine pregnancy testing
  • Maintains a COVID and Flu log.
  • Enters point-of-care lab results into PnC.
  • Assists medical providers during examinations and procedures as needed:
    • Ear lavage
    • Fluorescein eye exams
    • Suturing
    • Wound care
    • IV fluids
  • Gives intramuscular injections.
  • Orders titers and Quantiferon Gold testing for nurses.
  • Assists in explaining test procedures to patients.
  • Administers medications (oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, inhalation, topical) using proper technique.
  • Restocks, cleans and prepares the medical exam rooms.
  • Restocks and cleans the SHC lab.
  • Restocks the bathroom. Light cleaning may be occasionally required.

The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Current Medical Assistant Certification required.

Licensure
  • Current Basic CPR/AED preferred.

Experience
  • Two to three years’ experience in primary care (i.e. hospital, physician’s office, or ambulatory care setting) preferred.
Typical Hiring Range Commensurate with Experience.
