Organizational Unit Overview | The East Carolina University, School of Medicine, Pediatric Outpatient Clinic provides outpatient medical care for children from birth to age 21. The clinic staff assists clients in obtaining diagnosis and treatment for acute and chronic illnesses as well as provides nursing care. Staff provides health education and access to information to enhance client health and to prevent illness. Staff provides for client comfort and safety while endeavoring to be as cost effective to keep medical costs down. The Pediatric Clinics are a service component of the Department of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine. These clinics are involved in the treatment of patients as a function of the training and education of medical students, physicians and allied health personnel in primary medical care on a regional consultative basis for eastern North Carolina. |
Job Duties | The Department of Pediatrics is looking for a Certified Medical Assistant to work at the Adult and Pediatric HealthCare Clinic. The selected candidate will assist in the outpatient management of general pediatric and adult patients. This position necessitates an energetic and enthusiastic individual to assist with the outpatient health care management of both well and sick children. Independent care will be expected, including administering immunizations. Responsibilities of this position include nursing support, technical assistance, assisting physicians with some procedures, and the activities of maintaining a safe environment. The selected candidate will interact with residents, medical students, nursing students, and other learners on a daily basis to teach procedures and concepts that relate to nursing practice. The selected candidate will also serve as an educator for the patient population and their families regarding preventative health measures, disease, and disease management. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to handle high volumes of phone calls, possess excellent interpersonal communication skills, and basic computer skills needed for entering data into the electronic medical record. Accuracy and attention to detail and the ability to communicate with patients and patient families, as well as with healthcare professionals is crucial. Other responsibilities include the ability to work independently, prioritize and handle multiple tasks, and complete tasks efficiently and effectively in a timely manner. Currently, hours of clinic operation are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, with a rotating scheduled late day to cover patient care. CLINICAL SUPPORT POSITION – NOT SUBJECT TO STATE HUMAN RESOURCES ACT. The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center. Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. |
Minimum Education/Experience | Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Requires certification through the North Carolina Board of Nursing, or certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA); or, requires successful completion of the requirements from an accredited medical assisting program that permit eligibility to sit for a national certification exam. |
License or Certification required by statute or regulation | Certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). If not already certified, please note that Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants must be obtained within 6 months from your start date for continued employment. |
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education | Possess one year of outpatient clinical experience or completion of an appropriate internship. Current basic CPR certification. |
