Primary Purpose: 

Following national, state and organizational coding guidelines, the inpatient coder will thoroughly review inpatient medical records to identify and code all the diagnoses and procedures documented. The coder will use the 3M Encoder and computer assisted coding programs to assign codes and group records to MS-DRG’s and APR-DRG’s. The inpatient coder may be expected to code highly complex inpatient records including multiple traumas, burns, interventional cardiology and transplants and is aware of the impact of codes on expected mortality, patient safety indicators, payer denials, and other performance metrics.





Qualifications

 

Knowledge and Skills

 

Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Formal education in basic ICD-10-CM and PCS coding, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology and disease processes is required. Associate or Bachelor degree in healthcare related field, preferred.

 

Years of Experience:  1-2 years acute care coding experience.

 

Required Skills and Knowledge:  Excellent  computer skills including experience with the electronic medical record, encoder and computer assisted coding. Trained and competent in ICD-10 coding.  Technically competent to code all types of inpatient cases including multiple traumas, burns, interventional cardiology and transplants.

 

License and Certifications:  Certified Coders are required to be certified in one of the following: Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC).
