Description of Duties and Tasks
  • Identifies and reports technical problems which need to be addressed by improved policies
  • Ensures safe working laboratory conditions and complete all related safety and ceramics studio art training with various ceramics studio equipment. Maintains departmental policies and procedures to comply with federal, state, and local hazardous materials, health and safety, hazardous waste regulations, and other applicable regulations.
  • Monitors and maintains the Ceramics studio with spaces including kiln rooms, pug room and clay storage, glaze lab and glazing areas, carts, bisque storage areas, and spray booth.
  • Oversees and maintains a safe studio environment for students during open lab time. May assist students in use of lab equipment and facilities.   
  • Loads, unloads, and maintains kilns.
  • Recycles and pugs clay; maintains pug mills and dry storage area.
  • Maintains and cleans glaze lab.
  • Conducts research related to glaze formulation and maintains studio glazes.
  • Performs clerical duties including operating a computer, maintaining records and files, and compiling data related to the Ceramics program.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies and materials.
  • Cleans and wet-mops the studio floors weekly.
  • Assists visiting artists, scholars, and other invited guests for special projects and programs.

 

Knowledge

  • General knowledge of studio art production and safe handling of all ceramic’s materials.
  • Safety principles and practice as it applies to the area of Ceramics.
  • Office and bookkeeping skills with capability of learning new skills.

  • Capable of learning new software related to 3D printing, imaging, and glaze formulation.

 

 

Preferred Work Experience

  • 1 year of Ceramics studio experience, successful completion of Ceramics 1and 2, or experience working in a related field of 3D, Sculpture or Glass.

 

Required Education

  • Level I - Minimum: working toward an Associate in Arts degree with 3D emphasis or working toward a BFA degree in a related field.
  • Level II- An Associate of Arts degree with 3D emphasis, or BFA Ceramics.

 

 

Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in a variety of settings, including office, studio, workshops, and other campus spaces.
  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.
  • Lifting of objects up to 50+ pounds and occasionally up to 100lbs with assistance.
  • May be exposed to a variety of temperatures, noise, chemicals, and machinery.
  • Specific vision abilities may include close visions, distance vision, color vision and ability to utilize safety vision devices and equipment.

 

 

Safety

  • Work safely and follow all safety rules and procedures with mechanical equipment.
  • Report unsafe working conditions and behavior. Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe studio practices.

 

Pay Rate

Level I - $22.00/hour

Level II - $23.00/hour
