Description of Work Unit
As one of the nation’s top public research universities, Colorado State University (CSU) in Fort Collins, Colorado, is a land-grant institution, with enrollment of more than 33,000 students. The Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department at CSU is recognized both nationally and internationally for education, research, and service and outreach. The CEE Department comprises 34 faculty, 7 research scientists, 13 research associates, and 13 administrative staff. The Department offers undergraduate degrees in both civil engineering (CE) and environmental engineering (EnvE), and both the Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in civil engineering. The Department also offers graduate programs at the Master of Engineering (M.E.) level both on campus and via CSU’s distance education program known as CSU Online. The Department currently (2022-23) is educating 541 undergraduate students (321 in CE and 220 in EnvE) and 192 graduate students (84 Ph.D., 68 M.S., 40 M.E.). The faculty, research scientists/associates and students in the CEE Department are extremely active in conducting leading edge research in numerous areas of both civil and environmental engineering, as evident, in part, by the research expenditures which have averaged $14.2M over the last seven fiscal years (FY16-22) . Such research serves not only to solve real-world problems of current state, national, and international significance, but also to push the envelope of the discipline so that future generations can reap the benefits of our efforts towards enhancing society’s ability to sustain and develop the infrastructure necessary for our continued existence and quality of life. CEE alumni are distributed throughout the world and in every state within the USA, with many of them holding leadership positions within their companies, organizations, or countries.

Position Summary
The individual in this position will have been trained and specializes in writing and the ability to communicate with multiple audiences. The individual will report the Department’s significant events and news, support recruitment efforts, and engage with current students and alumni through social media and other channels. The individual must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment with the ability to quickly write and communicate internally and externally under pressure. The individual must possess strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines. The individual must have excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills, a commitment to diversity and inclusion, demonstrated ability to work with diverse people, and must be able to work successfully both individually and as part of a team. Occasional local and in-state travel will be required.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field.
  • Two years’ experience creating content on multiple media platforms including digital, print, and social media.
  • Experience and strong ability to develop and write feature articles/stories and create meaningful content for multiple audiences.
  • Experience creating and maintaining websites.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn and use social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, etc.)
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Five years’ experience in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or similar.
  • Experience using WordPress or similar content management system.
  • Experience with technical and science writing.
  • Experience in Adobe Creative Suite programs including Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Premier.
  • Design and photography/videography skills to create meaningful materials to engage the audience.
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team.

Duty/Responsibility
  • Proactively strategize Department communications to stay current and consistently engaged with target audiences.
  • Promote news, events, and accomplishments involving the faculty, staff, students, alumni, and other partners/stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and manage periodic release of most high impact stories via an electronic newsletter emailed to relevant audiences, such as national and international academic leaders (e.g., department heads/chairs, deans, etc.), current and former faculty, staff, students, alumni and other partners/stakeholders..
  • Coordinate a wide range of projects including, but not limited to, copywriting, layout design, website development, social media management, and logistical support related to project development and production.
  • Work in collaboration with the College and University communications groups and other stakeholders.
  • Actively evaluate all communications channels and evolve strategy based on data-driven results.
  • Generate online content that ensures a dynamic, relevant and mission-driven online presence.
  • Maintain and grow website design and content to reflect University branding.
  • Maintain Department-level social media platforms and assist in the planning and execution of publicity and social media campaigns.
  • Participate in and/or lead initiatives to increase communication and community-building/networking with distance student population.
  • Support Department and College communications efforts for a variety of groups including advising, admissions, faculty, staff, students, and research.
