Serve as a member of the 4-H Youth Development team to assist with the planning, development, implementation, delivery, and evaluation of 4-H Youth Development Programs. The Educator will be responsible for promoting program objectives and plans in three 4-H program initiative areas: Healthy Living, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), and Civic Engagement. Responsibilities also include Teen Programming, 4-H Youth Enrollment, and 4-H Club Support.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree with experience relevant to the role of the position. Bachelor’s Degree plus 4 years transferable, relevant, evidence-based research experience may substitute .

  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework in Education, Healthy Living, STEM, Civic Engagement, and/or Human/Youth Development.

  • Experience with Cooperative Extension or other similar educational organizations.

  • Experience in guiding and collaborating with volunteers.

  • Ability to identify and develop volunteer leadership.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to work effectively with advisory boards and committees, community, and funding partners.

  • Experience and ability to relate to and work effectively with youth.

  • Ability to initiate, plan, organize, implement, teach, deliver, and evaluate informal educational programs.

  • Ability to effectively participate in professional team efforts.

  • Ability and willingness to work with diverse audiences and maintain cultural sensitivity.

  • Ability to communicate effectively through verbal, written and visual channels using traditional methods and educational tools, as well as electronic technology (e.g., video, audio, computers, etc.).

Position Responsibilities & Essential Functions
 

Program Responsibilities:

Program Development – 20 %

  • Assist Supervisor with development of 4-H Youth Development educational programs to meet identified needs and diverse interests of participants and volunteers.

  • Assist Supervisor with development of Healthy Living, STEM, Civic Engagement, and Teen programming initiatives.

  • Assist Supervisor in research, identification, and selection of existing resources.

  • Assist with identifying activities and resources necessary to implement initiatives and projects.

  • Assist Supervisor in creation of program materials to address identified needs.

  • Assist Supervisor in making programmatic changes based on program evaluation outcomes and to meet changing local priorities.

  • Assist Supervisor in structuring programs to meet the needs of diverse program participants.

Program Delivery – 50 %

  • Deliver high quality 4-H Youth Development educational programs and events that address local, regional, and statewide 4-H Youth Development programming priorities in the Healthy Living, STEM, Civic Engagement, and Teen programming initiatives.

  • Deliver programs and participate in special projects including but not limited to 4-H Leader Trainings, 4-H Recruitment, County Fair, State Fair, 4-H Fundraising, Public Presentations, Produced in New York Contest, Creative Fiber Arts Revue, CCE Annual Meeting, Community Outreach & Promotional Events, Teen Programming, Youth Activity Nights, Workshops, Award Field Trips (day and overnight), 4-H Club Support, and other extension Association activities, as assigned.  

  • Utilize a variety of educational methods which may include direct teaching, group experiences, media, newsletters, electronic technology, internet, and distance learning to deliver programming.

  • Serve as subject matter resource.

  • Engage 4-H volunteers in program delivery using established materials.

  • Foster acceptance of program, methods, and policies to address community and individual needs and consider diverse audiences.

  • Provide educational program efforts via mass media including contributing articles to 4-H newsletter, utilizing emails, phone messages, Facebook, and website postings.

  • Interact with program participants while representing CCE in a professional manner at all times.

  • Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell, or other land grant universities in a professional manner as part of program delivery.

Program Evaluation – 5 %

  • Assist in the creation of program evaluation framework. 

  • Assist in analyzing collected program evaluation data for reporting and program improvement purposes using standard, established policy, procedure, and methods.

  • Assist with recommending program changes to strengthen and improve programs.

  • Communicate evaluation results and findings.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Direction – 5 %

  • Assist with establishing Association program goals and priorities to align with Association and statewide Plan of Work.

  • Assist with development of marketing strategies, public affairs, and special events to reach target audiences and meet program objectives.

  • Assist in identifying community and fiscal resources for program continuance and enhancement.

  • Provide supervisor with program related information to assist the budget development process.

Management – 5 %

  • Assist in monitoring program to ensure that educational content conforms to policies and objectives of the Association and is research based.

  • Assist with monitoring program financial status to ensure compliance with funding requirements, program budget, grant specifications, and adherence to Association strategies/Plan of work.

  • Assist with identifying ways to reduce costs and maximize existing resources within the Association. 

  • Make recommendations to the Supervisor regarding program budgetary needs.

  • Assist in solving problems and resolving conflicts that arise within the 4-H Youth Development program utilizing appropriate policies and procedures.

  • Assist with ensuring volunteer direction and management procedures are followed according to established policies and procedures by providing guidance, leadership, and resources for volunteers.

Coordination/Operation – 10 %

  • Maintain 4-H youth enrollment system and database.

  • Maintain, obtain, and prepare teaching materials necessary for 4-H Youth Development programs applying existing subject matter knowledge.

  • Maintain communication with constituents and the community through variety of methods such as newsletters, e-mails, electronic technology, internet, social media, website postings and content.

  • Provide support and resources to 4-H Clubs

  • Assist with coordination of marketing and promotion of 4-H Youth Development through public relation initiatives and networking/collaborating with government, economic, educational, and other organizations.

  • Interact with program participants, Association staff, program committees, county/community leaders, and other key stakeholders to collect evaluation data for improving programs.

  • Provide information as requested to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories on program progress and accomplishments for funders, advisory committees, Board, and others as necessary.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.

  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions.

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.

  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
