Full-time: 40 hours

Schedule: Monday - Friday 10:30pm - 7am

Pay: $17.10 per hour plus an additional $1.00 per hour as a night shift differential.

Location: Main Campus, 3700 “O” Street, Washington, DC

The Carpet and Floor Care Specialist performs specific cleaning and maintenance functions to provide a clean, safe environment. S/he takes care of hard floors and tile surfaces, vacuums carpets, and performs carpet shampooing and extraction. The incumbent performs other duties as assigned including, but not limited, to snow and ice removal, and clean up associated with water or fire damage and special event support. Reporting to a Custodial Supervisor along with custodians and working alone and as part of a team, the Carpet and Floor Care Specialist has additional duties that include but are not limited to:

  • Determines equipment and supplies needed to perform required tasks by looking at a floor or carpet and determining what needs to be done to ensure a high quality of standard.
  • Refinishes hard surfaces and resilient tile floors, adjacent moldings, elevator tracks, and trim, performing light, medium and heavy shower scrubbing using appropriate solutions and equipment.
  • Provides appropriate number of coats of finish required, operating floor machines that automatically dispense cleaning solutions, scrub and pick up dirty solutions.
  • Determines appropriate carpet cleaning technique, using rotor and extraction equipment, damp butts, shampoos, vacuums, and fans as necessary in carpet cleaning process.
  • Transports supplies and equipment needed to perform task and returns equipment to appropriate storage area, informing supervisor of equipment supply and maintenance needs.
  • Suggests improvements in service to improve unit operations, providing supervisors and department management with advice and suggestions regarding work methods, procedures, parts, tools and related matters for the purpose of improving the effectiveness and cost of service.
  • Ensures economic use of supplies and materials to conserve University and department resources, keeping the supervisor informed of supply and material needs to ensure that adequate inventory is maintained.
  • Draws and /or requisitions supplies, parts and materials needed, using such items economically to avoid undue costs.
  • Cleans administrative spaces, laboratories and classrooms, light diffusers, interior sills of exterior windows, and other spaces and items as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalency
  • 1 year of custodial work experience - and one-year minimum floor care experience preferred
  • Basic knowledge of English including the ability to read, write and speak English with understanding in order to read and understand product label instructions and University policies and procedures
  • Ability to relate custodial and maintenance problems clearly to supervisor and/or the Work Management Center
  • A valid driver’s license from Maryland, Virginia or District of Columbia

The successful candidate for Carpet and Floor Care Specialist will be required to complete a training program in building cleaning.

The Carpet and Floor Care Specialist is designated as an essential position, requiring incumbent to report to work during inclement weather at the regularly scheduled time, regardless of whether the University is closed, opening late, or closing early.
