Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Construction Services provides quality and professional construction services in support of maintaining, renovating and improving the function, safety, comfort and sustainability of campus facilities. The services delivered enable the University to preserve buildings while renovating, adapting and updating them to meet the changing needs of our customers and this campus. Our goal is to ensure that all projects are completed efficiently and effectively. Additionally, the quality of all craftsmanship will meet or exceed all Industry, Regulatory and University practices. Construction Services delivers renovation, alteration, maintenance or repair projects for the University with an estimated cost of less than five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000). Estimates are available upon request, prior to commencement of work.
Position Summary
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $4,081 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE:
$2,040.50 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $2,040.50 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.

Perform duties and responsibilities associated with the carpentry/construction trades, including but not limited to proper and safe use and operation of associated powered or hand tools of the trade; general maintenance, repair, replacement, fabrication, installation, and alteration of structures; reading and interpreting construction blueprints and detailed job descriptions; creating materials take-off lists and completing purchase requisitions for materials; completing requisitions for other purchases (i.e., tools and tool accessories as necessary;) planning, problem-solving, and reporting any issues to immediate supervisor.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the carpentry trade. Ability to safely use a variety of carpentry tools such as saws, drills and sanders. Ability to use materials to patch and paint walls and ceilings; read and interpret construction blueprints and detailed job descriptions. Requires attention to detail, teamwork, and good communication skills. Also requires a valid North Carolina driver’s license or ability to obtain one prior to start date. Ability to be on call and perform emergency callback on a rotating basis. Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of essential University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions require the University to close.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Progressive experience in carpentry/construction.
Required Licenses/Certifications
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Ability to climb ladders and scaffolds, move objects weighing up to 40 pounds, work with hands overhead for extended periods of time, crawl on hands and knees, and bend and stoop. Ability to work in offices, laboratories, classrooms, mechanical equipment rooms, attic crawl spaces and on roof tops. Working conditions can vary from extreme cold to high heat and rain and other outdoor elements.

**ELIGIBILITY FOR SIGN-ON BONUS

The selected candidate for this position may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. Qualified applicants must apply and be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:
 
To be eligible for a Sign-on bonus, an individual must not have worked in a probationary, permanent, or time-limited appointment in the last 12 months as an employee in North Carolina state government, including without limitation the judicial system, state executive branch agencies, and the university system.


 A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and  less than 40 hours per week).
