Position Overview

Facilities Services supports KU's mission of learning, scholarship, and creative endeavor by operating and maintaining the University's physical plant and grounds.  Duties include the construction, maintenance, and repair of items such as counters, cabinets, benches, partitions, floors, ceilings, acoustical ceilings, roofs, foundations, and furniture. Considerable latitude is given to complete projects and work is general reviewed for results after the project is completed. All work must be performed to National Building Code, National Fire and Safety Code, University and State policies and procedures.  This position requires the operation of a work issued vehicle.


Job Description

50% - Construction, Maintenance, and Repair: Lays out, constructs, installs, and repairs or modifies wooden structures and fixtures.  Examines blueprints to determine dimension of structure.  Lays out work using rules, framing squares, etc.  Selects materials such as lumber, prefabricated doors, glass, tile, ceiling tile, plastic, etc.  Builds, repairs, and installs counters, cabinets, benches, partitions, floors, ceilings, acoustical ceilings, using metal and wood stud construction.  Installs window shades, curtain rods, and a variety of equipment. Identifying types of roofs, inspecting and making repairs to roofs, gutters, and flashings. Install and maintain door and window hardware. Plans sequence of installation or repair to avoid obstruction and/or misplacement of materials.  Installs and finishes sheetrock, wood paneling, and other materials to finish constructed partitions and walls.  Work often requires matching existing work to different and special finishes.  Uses a variety of hand tools and power tools such as hammers, chisels, screwdrivers, planes, shapers, saws, etc.   Maintains ADA compliances.

30% - Bench Work:  Builds and repairs furniture, fabricates moldings and trim from rough lumber stock.  Builds cabinets, Formica countertops, shelf and drawer units, chalkboards, and bulletin boards.  Uses a variety of shop tools including calipers, hammers, screwdrivers, sharpeners, thickness planers, jointers, large table saws, radial arm saws, routers, and lathes.  Uses a variety of materials including solvents, glues, oils, varnishes, etc.  Establishes dimensional lines on lumber following templates.  Cuts, forms, and joins and finishes parts.  Completes work to meets specifications on the basis of knowledge of general finish bench work and specific projects as specified in blueprints or other work specifications.

20% - Reviews, orders, and otherwise obtains carpentry materials and equipment.  Completes work management job order and other associated paperwork pertaining to job assignments.  May train and act as a leader worker to lesser skilled maintenance employees.  Cleans job sites and cleans and repairs tools daily.  Performs other related work as assigned.


Position Requirements

  • Reach, grasp, lift, carry and place moderately heavy loads frequently and heavy loads occasionally (50 lbs) with or without accommodation.
  • Perform work above normal heights, in confined spaces, and in extreme temperatures – both hot and cold, inside and outdoors.
  • Ability to work with solvents and chemicals usual to the carpentry trade.
  • Work overtime and respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
  • Report to work during declared periods of inclement weather.
  • Must enter work order information digitally and perform other electronic communications as required.

  • Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or completion of GED equivalency.
  • Three years professional experience in carpentry.  A certificate of completion from a vocational school or an associate’s degree in the carpentry trade may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license by the time of hire and maintain the license throughout employment.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in troubleshooting and repair of electronic door opening and locking systems.
  • Familiarity with applicable ADA laws, fire codes, and hazardous materials treatment.
  • Experience reading and working from blueprints and layouts.
  • Experience installing flooring.
  • Experience in sheetrock finishing.
  • Experience in framing, window and door installation and maintenance, and trim carpentry.
  • Experience in roofing systems and repairs.
  • Experience working in a college or university setting.

    Advertised Salary Range

    No less than $45,898.44 annually ($22.06 hourly). Salary offers increase with relevant experience.
