Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Building Services provide full maintenance and repair services for all UNC facilities and ensure the proper operation of those facilities in support of the UNC mission of teaching, research and public service. Building Services supports more than 300 campus buildings with more than 18 million gross square feet of space. The teams that provide quality maintenance, repair and construction services that support the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University include Campus Maintenance, EMCS, Facilities Operations Support, Housing Support, HVAC Systems, Life Safety Services, and the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling. Campus Maintenance operates, maintains and improves the physical environment of the University through a complete line of shop services that include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, insulation, preventive maintenance and special laboratory equipment repair.
Position Summary
This recruitment is for two (2) Facility Maint Tech-BldgTrd positions. By applying, you will be considered for both positions: 20060474, 00030202
Performs carpentry and painting of gradually increasing complexity and performs preventive maintenance for the Campus Maintenance Carpentry Shop.
This position is part of the Campus Maintenance carpentry apprenticeship program. This program is a career pathway in which individuals obtain paid work experience, classroom instruction, and nationally recognized skill credentials in the carpentry trade. Apprentice will attend community college classes at night or on the weekends throughout the apprenticeship. Any qualifying courses completed before entering the program will be considered for program completion.
On successful completion of the program, the apprentice will receive the US Department of Labor Journeyman status and will be eligible for a journey-level position.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
A strong interest in carpentry and building maintenance as a career.
A Valid NC Driver’s License or ability to obtain one prior to start date.
Ability to read basic English and communicate effectively. Must be able to understand basic arithmetic calculations that may be needed within each trade.
Positive attitude, willingness to be taught, a team player and possessing a good work ethic are critical traits trainees must demonstrate. Candidates without those traits will not be successful in this program. It is essential that participants be able to take initiative, be motivated, and want to learn and work.
Trainees will be paired with more experienced staff every day. Interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of mandatory (essential) University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions may require the University to close.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Some experience in and/or exposure to roofing, painting, carpentry, and general exterior building maintenance is helpful but not mandatory.
High school diploma (or equivalent).

Ability to stand for extended periods of time, navigate stairs and climb ladders; and ability to work in small, tight spaces and bend, stoop, crawl and squat to complete work; ability to work at heights using ladders, lifts and scaffolding; move objects weighing in excess of 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation; wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) for the specific job, including but not limited to safety harnesses, fall protection, respirators, face masks or face shields, safety glasses, safety shoes and protective gloves.
