About the Department
The 900+ positions of the Facilities Division service the students and staff of the University’s teaching, research/administrative space and 2,240 acres of infrastructure. The Facilities Division provides design and building services, maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste removal, utility, mail, and motor pool services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to deliver cost effective services to the University, ensure completed projects and maintenance that conform to codes and regulations, while minimizing University liabilities and disruptions caused by the maintenance, repair, building, and equipment modifications to the University.
Essential Job Duties
Within the Lock Shop unit, this role performs non-standard maintenance and repair tasks related to carpentry and locksmithing. The incumbent possesses comprehensive knowledge of carpentry and locksmithing trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment. They are also proficient in understanding manufacture specifications, quality control, cost control, and safety.
Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Servicing, repairing and installing all doors, frames, and hardware, including fire rated doors, exit devices, closers, mortise, and cylindrical locking hardware
  • Makes keys via key punches, duplicating, and/or code-generating machines
  • Understands NFPA 101 and NFPA 80 life safety and fire codes
  • Researches and gathers information needed for the job
  • Repairs problems with all doors and frames, mechanical and electromechanical hardware and devices
  • Key bittings array for small format master keying, pinning of cores
  • Communicates with customers regarding scope of work
  • Handles project management tasks and has a working knowledge of processes and timelines
  • Reviews construction plans and hardware specifications according to University specifications and construction guidelines
  • Allocates appropriate resources and time for completion of own work and other’s work without scheduling conflicts
  • Serves as a technical expert; guide, direct, and coach others regarding application
Other Responsibilities
  • This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule.
  • This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Knows and functions in at least one other trade and possesses general knowledge of others.
  • Assists other trades as required.

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Must be able to effectively communicate verbally with supervisors and the general public. Understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters
  • Working knowledge of the standard practices and methods of the carpentry/locksmithing trade
  • The primary functions of the position require the ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds frequently and up to 90 pounds occasionally, with or without a reasonable accommodation
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a university performing building renovations. This includes installing and repairing doors and frames, experience with hanging doors, repair and installation of door closers. Knowledge of hardware manufacture specifications and guidelines. Knowledge of keying small format cores, operating key machines and key punches. Using code machines, and electric drills, door planers, and hand tool.
  • Basic low voltage knowledge preferred
  • Understanding and ability to work with hardware specification take-offs.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and floor plans
  • Experience with developing cost estimates and proposals
Required License or Certification
  • Locksmith license within 6 months of hire
  • Must be able to obtain a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire and it must be maintained
