THIS IS A ONE-YEAR TERM LIMITED POSITION

Scope of Responsibilities:

Career Specialist supports student employment on-campus, particularly students employed through work study. This position is responsible for developing and enhancing on- and off-campus job opportunities, and building career readiness resources, and training for over 1,600 (3,800 students eligible for work-study) students at Duke University. This position serves as a part of the Duke Career Center Employer Relations team, focusing on developing and maintaining relationships with on- and off-campus employers to cultivate and enhance job opportunities and provide high-quality career readiness resources for students participating in the student employment program. Duties include communicating prompt and accurate information, running data and reports, planning recruitment events, creating and curating career readiness content/resources, conducting site visits to employers and professional associations/chambers of commerce, and providing industry information to the career advising team to support hiring practices and trends in the industry. The position will report to the Assistant Director, Employer Relations (Career Specialist, Sr.) in the Duke Career Center and will collaborate often with colleagues in the Karsh Office of Undergraduate Financial Support and Office of Student Loans and Personal Finance. 

Duties (%):

Student Coaching and Training (45%):

  • Create programs and workshops to support students in securing on- and off-campus part-time employment following work-study guidelines, including potential visa restrictions.
  • Identify and publicize opportunities that enable students to build career-readiness skills and gain work experience while contributing to the campus community, as well as guiding students through choosing a major, identifying internships and jobs, crafting resumes and cover letters, and practicing interviewing for available positions. This position will also be responsible for significant programming for students to develop skills sought by employers across all fields, and to support their career goals.
  • Conduct outreach to current/prospective students to promote benefits of student employment opportunities. Provide individual/group advisement for students exploring work study role and experiential learning opportunities.  Provide ongoing support and training (both leadership and professional) for students throughout the application and employment process.

Employer Engagement, Training & Support (40%):

  • Coordinates the development of student-employment postings in the Durham and Triangle area to increase the number and types of opportunities available to Duke students.
  • Works collaboratively with offices, centers and organizations on the Duke campus to enhance current offerings. 
  • Responsible for the development and management of relationships with new and existing eligible employers and providing administrative support and communications to employer questions and requests in coordination with the work-study compliance office.
  • Attends and assists in the coordination of employer site visits and organizational meetings.
  • Develop and deliver training for all supervisors of student employees to focus on effective supervision and goal-setting to promote the professional development of all student employees in coordination with HR resources and the work-study office.

Assessment & Strategic Planning (15%):

  • Responsible for providing recommendations regarding short- and long-term goals and initiatives, developing the student employment brand, developing education, and training efforts, and updating student employment policies, procedures, and processes in collaboration with Financial Aid.
  • On a continual basis, the Career Specialist will evaluate efforts and processes, research trends, and identify and recommend opportunities for enhancements to the student employment function. Incumbent must continually collaborate and communicate with Financial Aid, internal and external staff, and leadership to ensure consistency, effectiveness, and efficiency of methods and results.

Required Qualifications

Education/Training

Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work requires one to three years of experience in program administration or involving academic, instructional or counseling activities to acquire skills necessary to plan, coordinate and implement a variety of program activities and events.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Skills

Ability to provide guidance and direction to subordinates, including setting standards and monitoring performance.

Skills using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to problems.

Skills evaluating program performance, summarizing findings, communicating results, and forming an action plan.

Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, and coordination of people and resources.

Minimum Qualifications
Education

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.


Experience

Work requires one year of experience in a placement or other student services function to become familiar with career counseling and placement programs.
