Job Description

The Career Counselor works under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Graduate Programs and in collaboration with SGSUP leadership, faculty and staff, as well as partners across the university. This role provides resources to help graduate SGSUP students in their career development, raises awareness of the school’s fields
among prospective students, and plans, organizes, and coordinates in annual school events. This role is also responsible for strengthening and expanding the school’s relationships with alumni, local employers, and relevant professional organizations.

We seek a high-performing, positive, service-oriented individual with excellent attention to detail to work with our diverse students and alumni both on campus and online. The Specialist Senior will work in a collaborative environment with staff, faculty, and students, helping to contribute to the next generation of professionals in
the fields of geographical sciences and urban planning.

Essential Duties

  • Initiate and build partnerships with employers to develop student opportunities for experiential endeavors locally, state-wide, nationally, and internationally.
  • Collect and report on employment and other data relevant to careers, internships, job placement and student/alumni success stories.
  • Manage student placement agreements and internship contracts ensuring university policies and procedures are followed; evaluate appropriateness and relevance of internships.
  • Support the career journey of our students during their program of study – helping them become career-ready and directly connect their skills, talents, interests, and education to the rapidly changing world of work.
  • Use Salesforce tools to track, respond to, and follow-up on inquiries related to careers and internships.
  • Provide individual, drop-in, and group career coaching services to students to develop life-long career capabilities, including career decision-making, narrative, networking, interviewing, etc.
  • Identify and integrate career tools, resources, events, and activities to assist students on their unique career journeys.
  • Engage with university students, staff, faculty, and alumni in one-on-one and in group settings in-person, via Zoom, phone, e-mail, and social media.
  • Assist with SGSUP events including community-building efforts, orientation, graduation, alumni, student organizations, career events, workshops, professional development/networking opportunities, etc. as needed.
  • Discover, maintain, and post relevant positions on the department internship and career webpages.
  • Facilitate, support, lead, and/or teache career development courses, workshops, or other programming.
  • Serve as liaison to ASU Career and Professional Development Services (CPDS) in support of university and unit initiatives.
  • Maintain and update all career development content on the SGSUP webpages as needed.
  • Stay up to date on employment trends within SGSUP’s disciplines.
  • Provide regular and ad-hoc reports to the Assistant Director of Graduate
  • Programs or other school leaders as needed.
  • Attend and support meetings as assigned including agenda preparation, minute taking, presenting, and distribution of documents.
  • Support program and school accreditation, and other assessment activities, including reporting, data collection, data analysis, alumni and student surveys, focus groups, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the continuity of department operations and to meet department needs, which can shift over time.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in counseling, student personnel, or related discipline and 3 years of related experience.  OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Experience in advising/coaching/counseling related to educational programming and student success in higher education.
  • Excellent counseling, communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of recruiting practices.
  • Experience in working independently while functioning as a team member.
  • Experience in time management, event organization, and managing multiple projects and details.
  • Experience in establishing, developing, and maintaining positive interpersonal work relationships.
  • Evidence of effective communication with a strong understanding of audience and use of grammar.

Working Environment

  • Use office equipment including a personal computer.
  • Communicate to perform essential duties.
  • Read/interpret written and oral instructions/directions.
  • Anticipated work hours are Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm on the Tempe Campus, with occasional conference travel and/or evening events.
  • Hybrid Remote work will be considered upon completion of the training period. Dean or vice president-level approval is required.

The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP) is a major participant in the instructional and research activities of Arizona State University. A staff team of 20 supports 30 tenure/tenure-track faculty including four members of the National Academy of Sciences, approximately 1,000 undergraduate majors (split between campus and online) and 140 graduate students studying in one of six graduate degree programs (MA and PhD programs in
