Job Description Summary:
The George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs (ESIA) is one of the world’s leading schools of international affairs and one of the largest schools of international affairs in the United States. Located in the heart of Washington, D.C., its mission is to educate the next generation of international leaders, conduct research that advances understanding of important global issues, and engage the policy community in the United States and around the world.
The Office of Graduate Student Services (GSS) seeks an outstanding, student-centered Career and Academic Advisor committed to supporting ESIA graduate students’ academic and career growth. The Office of Graduate Student Services, which includes Academic Advising, Career Development, and International Education, is dedicated to providing students with streamlined service for the full spectrum of the student experience, from developing academic and professional goals to successful job and internship search strategies. Reporting to the Assistant Director, the Career and Academic Advisor will join a collaborative team of motivated professionals who provide supportive individual academic advising, career coaching and student programming. To help students create an academic plan that aligns with their professional goals, the Career and Academic Advisor will provide academic advice from orientation through graduation, review program requirements and opportunities, and counsel students and alumni on career opportunities and professional development. This comprehensive model empowers students to identify, pursue and achieve their goals.
Specific responsibilities include:

  • Provides specialized career coaching and academic advising including assessments, resume review, interview skills, networking techniques, and proactive job/internship search opportunities.
  • Monitors graduate student progress, audits degree requirements and completion, reaches out to students with academic difficulty, identifies problem areas and refers students to appropriate campus resources.
  • Contributes to the design and delivery of professional development and student support programs, seminars and sessions (online and in person). Assists in assessment of program outcomes.
  • Reviews resumes, cover letters, and Comprehensive Action Plans. Maintains notes regarding students’ career and academic advising in Handshake and Salesforce.
  • Offers strategic guidance based on student goals and interests, providing information and resources for graduate students and alumni. Collaborates with colleagues to revise and/or develop online resources, general career resource guides, and information for GSS website.
  • Assists with data collection and reports on an ongoing basis. Analyzes data from a wide variety of sources to support the development of programmatic goals, assessments, and evaluation strategies.

Perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. This is a hybrid position with some days remote and some days in-person.
