About the Program: 

Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS), a department within the Division of Student Affairs (DSA), operates from a community systems approach in providing short-term psychological counseling, outreach/prevention, and consultative services to the University community. A developmental perspective provides the cornerstone for our work with students, faculty, and staff. Services are provided in a safe and supportive environment that celebrates all forms of diversity and polyculturalism.

CAPS' purpose is tied directly to the mission of both the DSA and the educational mission to the University. By helping students learn skills to improve their overall mental health, academic performance, and quality of life, we hope to enhance the likelihood they will succeed at CSU Channel Islands.

We accomplish our purpose by practicing our knowledge of the science of human behavior as we make biopsychosocial interventions; teach, mentor, and consult with our students, faculty, staff, and other contributors to student success. The biopsychosocial model is a general model or approach stating that biological, psychological (which entails thoughts, emotions, and behaviors), and social factors (socio-economical, socio-environmental, and cultural) all play a significant role in human functioning in the context of disease or illness. We further accomplish our purpose by evaluating the effectiveness of our services as it relates to student success.

About the Position: 

Provides psychological prevention, intervention, treatment, education, and health promotion services and support to the University community.

Minimum Degree Requirements:

Master's degree in Psychological, Counseling, Social Work, or Marriage and Family Therapy

Required Qualifications:

Certificates, licenses, or education required:

• California licensure or license-eligible within two years in one of the following: Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), or Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
• Ability to be successfully credentialed by verification of training, experience, and licensure status

Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position:

• Excellent ability to work as a member of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team
• Ability to demonstrate awareness of the cultural diversity of the University community, and establish and maintain cooperative and effective relations with University employees, students, and the public
• Strong crisis management and intervention skills with a broad range of presenting concerns
• Training and clinical experience using a brief therapy model
• Training and experience in individual and group psychotherapy, brief therapy modalities, and crisis intervention
• Demonstrated experience or expertise working with multi-cultural populations, including Latino/Latina, Asian, African American, International, LGBTQ, and students from other underrepresented populations

Applicants should demonstrate the commitment to effectively work with and engage a diverse student population and evidence of how they would successfully mentor minoritized students with special focus on Latinx, Black/African American, American Indian, and Asian/Asian American/Pacific Islander students.

Preferred Qualifications:

Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities preferred for this position:

• Clinical experience in a college setting and Experience in developing and providing outreach and education services to meet the mental health needs of college institutions
• Interest and demonstrated expertise in one of more concerns commonly presented by students is desirable, including therapy with survivors of interpersonal violence, substance abuse, and eating disorders
• California Licensure strongly preferred.
• Experience using (or ability to quickly learn how to use) electronic medical records (EMR)
• Service in U.S. military
• Bilingual (Spanish)

Responsibilities:

Assessment, Counseling, Crisis Intervention, Clinical Consultation (60-65% of time):

• Conducts weekly intakes
• Provides short-term individual, couple, and group counseling to students presenting with developmental, psychiatric, and academic concerns
• Provides triage coverage and crisis intervention, including occasional after-hours crisis response
• Provides consultation to faculty, staff, and third-party stakeholders (e.g., responding to distressed students)
• Provides workshops and other educational outreach activities to the campus community
• May serve as primary and/or secondary supervisor for clinical trainees at the discretion of the Director.

Administrative, Outreach, and Professional Development Activities (35-40% of time):

• Provides peer review and clinical consultation to other clinicians
• Participates in campus-wide events and activities
• Participates in community service activities appropriate to the profession
• Contributes to creative activities that enhance understanding and practice of psychology
• Assists with program evaluation and implementation of agency developmental needs identified
• Assists with assessment, data analysis, and drafting/reviewing reports for promoting CAPS to the campus community
• Maintains licensure through appropriate required continuing professional education
• Attends all staff meetings, clinical team meetings, and other Divisional and University meetings as scheduled
• Maintains clinical records and completes administrative record-keeping in a timely manner

Performs additional related duties as assigned.

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $5,405 - $5,817 per month.
