  • JOB DUTIES

Description

Conduct follow up on cancer patients indexed in the Cancer Registry database through written and oral contact. Data includes cancer status, survival, and recurrence information on follow-up patients in the registry database. Identify new cancer patients from pathology reports and other case finding sources for abstracting and follow-up. Create electronic file to transmit reportable cancer cases to the Cancer Surveillance Program. Prepare cases for contract abstractors. Assist in maintenance of registry files and other office duties as assigned. Hourly Salary Range: $31.59 – $41.68

Qualifications

·         Experience working in a Cancer Registry or taking Cancer Registry classes, and/or CTR-eligible ·         Excellent organizational skills in maintaining Cancer Data files and conducting annual follow up of cancer data center patients. ·         Excellent data entry skills with a high degree of accuracy. ·         Skill in prioritizing and performing a variety of duties within a system that has constantly changing assignments, priorities, and deadlines. ·         Detailed knowledge of laws, rules and regulations affecting the confidentiality of medical information, and the release of medical information. ·         Skill in working independently and following through on assignments in an environment with frequent interruptions. ·         Ability to develop and maintain effective, credible working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, administration and the medical staff. ·         Excellent communication skills in contacting patients and answering patient questions. ·         Demonstrated ability in working as a team and collaborating with colleagues. ·         Skill in writing legibly and using basic English grammar to complete concise documentation. ·         Skill in speaking clearly and distinctly using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to obtain and convey information to individuals at various organizational levels and to the general public. ·         Ability to work independently and exercise appropriate decisions in determining follow up actions and complete assignments in a timely manner. ·         Ability to judge system/procedure malfunctions/discrepancies and circumstances to be reported to supervisor for immediate action. ·         Basic knowledge of the California Cancer Registry (CCR), SEER Reporting requirements, and Commission on Cancer requirements. ·         Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes. ·         Knowledge of the ICD-0 coding classification scheme, or other diagnostic coding classification scheme such as ICD-9 or ICD-10. ·         Working knowledge of a medical record, and how to interpret the contents of a record. ·         Ability to abstract clinical and demographic information from patient records and enter accurately into Cancer Data center database. ·         Knowledge of CNEXT database. ·         Working knowledge of computers and their applicability in the management of health information. Ability to use hospital systems including but not limited to Word, Excel, and Outlook. ·         Basic Working knowledge of a large university research hospital: its purpose, functions, and internal/external relationships. ·         Knowledge and understanding of functions and activities of hospital departments contacted for source information to expeditiously coordinate follow up procedures.
