- Conservation Begins Here. The Student Conservation Association (SCA), Americas #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire local North West Indiana residents for the Calumet Tree Conservation Corp program. Program Dates: April 10th -Nov-24th 2023, (8 hrs/ day, 40 hrs/week: Tues-Sat, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM for 36 weeks) Training Dates: April 10th-14th 2023 8am-3pm (mandatory paid training) Primary Responsibilities: Supervise, transport, and mentor a team of four crew members, ages 18-25 for 36 weeks to plant and water 500 trees in the Grand Calumet watershed within the Indiana communities of East Chicago, Hammond, Gary, Whiting, Highland, and Hobart. This crew will perform maintenance on the 3,000+ trees planted throughout these communities since 2017. The Crew Leader will coordinate the daily work of the crew members, ensuring that work is done in a safe, timely, and effective manner. The Leader will also capture project outcomes through photo documentation, data collection, reporting, and evaluations. Leaders must attend trainings to ensure safe and effective tree canopy conservation and basic digital mapping and data collection techniques. The Leader will work closely with SCA and USDA Forest Service staff to recruit, develop, and support volunteers with a goal of increasing the number of individuals engaged in tree canopy stewardship in those communities. Crew members meet at a centralized pick-up/drop-off location (5400 Cline Ave. East Chicago, IN) and are transported to their work site each day by the Crew Leader in a work issued pickup truck. Specifically, the Crew Leader will: Act as a Crew Supervisor, by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA Perform tasks as a Program Administrator, by organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing a budget, and communicating with SCAs program directors
- Qualifications
- Must be 21 years or older. Must have valid drivers license for 3+ years and have clean driving record (trailer towing experience a plus!) Current ability to meet SCAs criminal background check standards, as well as providing proof of vaccination for COVID-19 as well as any booster shots. Current basic First Aid and CPR certifications, or ability to obtain before program start. Interest in learning about arboriculture and best tree planting practices. Able to perform tasks requiring physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions and on difficult terrain while maintaining a positive attitude, able to lift and move up to 50 lbs., and set an example for crew members. Able to perform expense tracking, timesheet management, online data tracking outputs, and final report. Ability to maintain safe, productive, and enjoyable work environment, and proven experience in successfully managing people. Problem-solving, time management, organizational, and prioritizing skills.
