The School of Medicine (SOM) has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior BI Business Analyst.

The Operations and Financial Reporting Department, Office of the Dean provides financial oversight and analysis of the Dean's Office departments as well as academic departments’ financial activities within the SOM.  Under the general direction of the Director for Departmental Computing, the Senior BI Business Analyst serves as a flexible resource that works independently to examine and analyze administrative systems, fiscal and/or administrative records, and institutional practices.  The Senior BI Business Analyst reports to management on results, provides impact assessments, and recommends training and improvement in operations and information systems.  This position has a wide range of responsibilities to include requirement gathering for projects, acting as the point of contact for SoM clients, financial reporting and analysis, operational assessments, and documenting projects, systems, and processes. This position acts in an advisory capacity to senior management in the School providing research and analytical support on data and reporting issues.  Must demonstrate effective project management analysis and sound business judgment.

Position Complexities
Interpreting, analyzing and disseminating rules, policies and procedures, as well as ensuring staffs’ accurate understanding and application, is critical. This position must provide technical expertise in the integration of financial information from several sources (UW Financial Accounting System (FAS), School of Medicine department shadow systems, University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, as well as affiliates such as Seattle Children’s Hospital and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center).  This position must determine which data is necessary, the source of the data and the most efficient method for obtaining the data and converting to a format consistent with the Academic Medical Center reporting requirements.  It will be necessary to make theoretical or subjective judgments with respect to compatibility of data between different organizations (i.e. mapping of financial statement interfaces between organizations).  New approaches, methods or techniques will be required to align School of Medicine departments and outside organizations’ processes to provide information necessary for consolidated financial statements.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Business Analysis:
• Apply user centered design practices, interview stakeholders and system users to determine functional requirements for new and existing systems.  Facilitate discussions with stakeholders and subject matter experts to research and analyze the end-users needs.  Create documentation to support understanding of business needs and document the project requirements.
• Identify, develop and evaluate solutions encompassing a variety of automated and manual techniques, considering programming complexity, on-going technical support requirements and department end user workflow where applicable.
• Review new or modified program, including documentation, diagram, and flow chart, to determine if program will perform according to user request and conform to guidelines.  Create project documentation as necessary in support of agile development techniques.
• Analyze information systems, data base models and/or interface needs. Evaluate information gathered from multiple sources and ensure accuracy and completion of the data.  Partner with developers to test and validate the data.
• Write, revise, and verify quality standards and test procedures for program design and product evaluation to attain quality of software.  Work with the users to test the requested changes and document the results.  Provide trainings and presentations on new products/features, as needed.
• Provide support with analytical, design, and development tasks associated with the implementation of information system solutions.
• Provide on-going support to clients by correlating user needs with information system design and communicate with the department’s developers.
• Help prioritize, troubleshoot, and resolve system and service problems, in order to provide very reliable and highly available computing services.
• Collect and assemble data needed for various SOM surveys.

Project Management:
• Serve in a project management capacity over low to moderately complex projects.  Work with formal and informal project plans, and work independently or in a group to meet deadlines.
• Identify appropriate level of oversight and resource requirements, facilitate team member activities and communicate project progress with management, developers, customers, and users.
• Use solid judgment to determine appropriate escalation and resolution of issues within project structure. Work with management to evaluate and communicate business issues and impact.
• Help managing competing stakeholder priorities and assist in identifying best approach to meet expected deadlines.

Other Related Duties as Assigned:
• Complete special projects for the dean and executive leadership.
• Develop cross-training for staff on reporting, databases, and external resources.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Science or related field or equivalent education/experience.
• 6-8 years experience.

Additional requirements:
• Experience in data and process modeling.
• Experience in relational database applications such as MS SQL and Access.
• Demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions for complex financial reporting situations.
• Demonstrated experience working in large, highly structured environments.
• Proven leadership and strong communication skills (end-user orientation).
• Ability to work independently with a high degree of reliability, accuracy and productivity.
• Ability to create accurate, cogent reports.
• Proficiency with various computer programs and databases.
• Excellent communication skills, demonstrating diplomacy and tact.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.

DESIRED REQUIREMENTS
• Proficient in SQL and VB Scripting, MS Access, Power BI and MS SQL Reporting Services.
• Knowledge of University of Washington financial systems.
• Experience with academic medical center financial reporting.
• Recent experience with financial reporting applications (such as general ledger) conversion or installation.
