The Business Services Directorate (BSD) provides high-quality business services to support the Lab's research initiatives by participating in cross-functional teams with a focus on risk mitigation and cost management, which is a critical component to the Lab's success. Led by the Chief Financial Officer, Brookhaven's Business Services Directorate includes the Budget Office, Fiscal Services Division, Procurement & Property Management Division, Chief Financial Office, and the Business Operations Offices. The Directorate manages a broad range of financial activities, including the planning and implementation of the Lab's fiscal matters and its approximately $700 million annual budget.

The Business Services Directorate (BSD) has an opening for a Business Specialist (A6) / Advanced Business Specialist (A7) position within the Energy and Photon Sciences Business Operations Office.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for serving as the primary point of contact for the Accelerator or Photon Division at NSLSII.

    • Tracking overall business performance by analyzing financial data, ensuring data complies with BNL policies and procedures.

    • Partner with department leaders.

    • Develop multi-year financial plans.

    • Monitor, report and analyze all financial data with Departmental group leaders.

  • Responsible for internal/external financial reporting and financial oversight, including specialized reports for the Department staff.

  • Adherence to all BNL business rules, allowable cost monitoring, and compliance.

  • Operating in a team environment and remaining flexible with assignments.

  • Basic knowledge should include budget planning, labor forecasting, development of current year cost plans, analysis of current year cost, and preparation of financial summaries for management, periodic reviews, and Laboratory planning exercises.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • At least four (4) years of experience in substantive and relevant work. A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance/business, or directly related field, or equivalent experience based on 2:1 (experience: college) years.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including intermediate skills with Excel and databases.

  • Understanding of financial principles including budget, forecasting, reporting, and analysis.

  • Exercises a high degree of initiative and professional judgment.

  • Ability to establish routine contacts and the ability to provide detailed and complex information that will be used to make decisions of business consequence.

  • Able to identify issues encountered within own area of responsibility; act proactively to develop solutions and provide recommendations to avoid problems.

  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment.

  • Demonstrate ability to prioritize and effectively deal with deadlines.

  • Excellent oral and written communication is essential.

  • Should be a flexible team player who will successfully interact with both the engineering and business staff.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 7 years of related work experience showing progressively more complex responsibilities in a business role.

  • Familiarity with PeopleSoft and the ability to generate queries and reports.

  • Extensive knowledge of the Laboratories Financial system, policies, and procedures.

  • Familiarity with Workday and Microsoft Power BI.

  • In depth knowledge of BNL procedures and policies.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • The incumbent will occasionally work protracted or irregular hours.

  • Computer/keyboard work is an essential duty.

Compensation:

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $79400 - $111600 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.

  • This is a fully on-site position with a hybrid work arrangement.
