Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Athletics exists to provide educational and athletic opportunities to young men and women, to provide an environment for student-athletes to learn, advance and excel both academically and athletically, and to serve the interests of the University by complimenting and enhancing its diversity and quality of life. Through its athletic programs, the University seeks to unite alumni, faculty, administration and students in a common shared experience. The governing unit within the Department of Athletics is the Director’s Office, which is the administrative office and clearinghouse for the entire Department of Athletics, and promotes the department’s guiding principle of educating and inspiring through athletics. This unit provides support to administrators, coaches, staff members and student-athletes in order to provide and promote a premier intercollegiate athletic program for The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Department of Athletics is a highly visible public relations arm of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with statewide, national and international recognition.
Position Summary
Serves as Business Coordinator and reports directly to the Senior Associate Athletic Director for External and Strategic Communications with responsibility for managing the daily business processes and operations for multiple External Relations and Administration units including budget oversite and reconciliation management, purchasing, inventory control, scheduling, coordination and planning. Emphasis on budget management, summarizing and reconciling financial data, records management, event planning, program coordination and administrative functions including those of Athletics Administration and External Relations is critical to meeting the department’s business needs. This position will also be responsible for projects related to External Relations, including Communications, GoHeels Productions and Marketing. Confidentiality and teamwork are key to this role.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The ability to clearly communicate answers, solutions, and expectations is essential. Must be organized and proactive in all areas demonstrating the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with minimal supervision. Must have excellent budgeting skills and experience balancing and keeping track of budgets. Must demonstrate effective decision-making skills and be able to manage work in time sensitive situations. Attention to detail and the ability to work effectively as a team member is essential. Must demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain productive and collaborative professional work relationships, and respond to questions, procedure guidelines in assigned area(s). Must demonstrate competencies of applicable University policies, procedures and information systems experience. Knowledge of current trends and demonstrated experience with standard software applications, including MS Office, Windows, Excel. Must be proficient in PowerPoint. May require database management skills with ability to produce reports. Must be able to perform duties and responsibilities with a high level of independence an confidentiality and have the ability to interpret procedures and guidelines when responding to inquiries and advising Athletic department administrators, coaches and staff. Confidentiality and teamwork are essential to this role.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience providing administrative support in an athletic or professional office environment; experience performing financial/accounting functions; working knowledge of university and state financial policies and procedures; proficient in the use of various office software applications such as Word and Excel; excellent communication skills and the ability to interact respectfully and comfortably with all individuals in a diverse, multicultural environment.
Required Licenses/Certifications
Valid NC Driver’s License
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Communicate orally and in writing. Attention to detail. Ability to function in a fast paced environment with time sensitive details. Ability to move/lift up to 15 lbs. Ability to navigate stairs.
