Organizational Unit Overview
The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.
Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.
Job Duties
This position is located at the School of Dental Medicine, Community Service Learning Center and is the practice site administrator for the Community Service Learning Center (CSLC). This position will manage the business, financial, human resources and policy compliance functions as well as have clinical managerial oversight for clinical processes, quality assurance, and compliance. He/she will also serve as the patient services director for the CSLC by monitoring scheduling, financial counseling, and hearing and resolving any concerns a patient might have with his/her care or treatment. The Business Manager serves as resource for patient programs and assists patients and staff with questions regarding patient services options. In addition, the Business Manager plays an important role in the education of the students as a part of the practice management curriculum. Since a critical part of the SoDM Mission statement is to ‘Provide and enhance oral health services for underserved North Carolinians through implementation of community-oriented service learning and interprofessional collaborations’ the Business Manager is responsible for fostering positive relationships with community leaders and working collaboratively with them to accomplish this mission. It can come in the form of anything from ‘Give Kids a Smile’ to Career Days with older students or sharing Oral Health information to the younger ones. He/she will work collaboratively with community partners to assist in delivering oral health care to underserved patients.
This position communicates with area health partners to facilitate a whole health approach for patient care.
This position will manage the business, operational, human resources, and financial functions of the clinic as well as have managerial oversight for clinical processes, quality assurance, and compliance. This position will manage various programs instituted at the CSLC to include but not limited to the Reduced Fee Program, Payment Plan reviews and agreements, NC Farmworkers Program, Ryan White Program, Patient Care Fund, Teaching Case Proposals, and Grant Case Proposals. Each of these programs has very different guidelines. This position will be required to make independent decisions using sound business practices and policy and procedure requirements. This position will monitor workflow processes and procedures and modify those workflows as needed to meet the requirements of the CSLC. The position will also interpret policy changes and institute and facilitate the modified processes to meet those changes as well as ensure the continued compliance with those policies and procedures. The Business Manager’s role in work with the CSLC Director to propose long and short-term goals for the CSLC is mission-critical to the School of Dental Medicine.
Basic Knowledge Requirements:
This position must have the ability to independently manage the business, financial, facilities, and human resources functions for this offsite location. The person in this position must be able to apply established state, university, and School policies and procedures to the CSLC location and develop and implement workflows and processes to support the mission and goals of the School of Dental Medicine. The person in this position must be able to conduct financial management for the
CSLC and monitor revenues and expenditures as well as forecast future needs. This position must have detailed knowledge of the university accounting and budget policies and procedures. This position must also be able to compile, analyze, and summarize data to support budget needs and forecasting. The person in this position must be able to serve in full supervisory capacity and have experience in developing work plans and conducting performance evaluations. This position requires the knowledge of human resource policies and procedures and the ability to recruit and select employees for hire. This position requires the ability to serve in a human resource role for this offsite location for leave and time approval, coaching, and disciplinary actions as well as to serve as a resource for policy and procedure assistance and guidance. This position requires the ability to identify, recognize, and resolve difficult problems using the available and established procedures as applicable and to be able to make quick and sound decisions to resolve immediate problems. The person in this position must use his/her best judgement in quickly analyzing situations and making decisions for which there may not be a policy or procedure in place to resolve the business challenge at hand. This position also requires the ability to compile,
analyze, and review data to assist in decision making, business functions, and
forecasting. The person in this position serves as the community liaison and point of contact and must be able to communicate information clearly and concisely. This position must have the ability to develop written documents and reports and analyze and summarize these reports for the Dean’s office and the CSLC Director. This position requires moderate computer experience and the use of electronic records. This position also requires experience and a high level of proficiency using Microsoft Office applications to include Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
