Responsibilities:
MIPAR is the grant administration service center for the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and receives funding from federal, state and local government agencies and foundations. As such, its administration of funds from the sources comes under scrutiny, and the failure to administer these funds according to stringent sponsor guidelines can result in serious repercussions for the
University.
 
The Business Manager in MIPAR provides financial oversight involving discretion and judgment to grants for research faculty from pre-award to close out. The Business Manager assists faculty in the submission of grant proposals, including budget preparation, adhering to sponsor guidelines and electronic submission; monitors expenditures for allowability using knowledge of Uniformed Guidance; provides periodic financial summaries to faculty PI and funding sponsors, as requested; and will have primary signature authority for hiring, payroll, timesheets, expense documents, DBE’s, retros and journal entries for these grants.
 
In summary, this position involves the exercise of discretion and judgment, with the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance which effect MIPAR and the University.
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a Bachelor’s Degree and at least two years of work experience in grant and/or business administration.

Requires knowledge and skill in applying analytical techniques to the identification and resolution of grant administration issues; knowledge of uniformed guidance; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty and staff; experience managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines under own supervision; ability to manage budget and monitor expenditures of projects; ability to present ideas and information clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing; comprehensive knowledge of USM policies and procedures and the institution's purpose, goals and procedures; strong skills in maintaining confidentiality of information and handling sensitive matters with discretion and tact; and proficiency in spreadsheet applications.

Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Master's Degree
  • Four years of work experience in grant and/or business administration
  • Experience in higher education
  • Proven ability to work with various software technologies, such as PeopleSoft Financial and Human Resources, Kuali and PAW is strongly desired
