Position Description

The Business Launch Specialist position is a three-year, time-limited position. This position serves as a first-level business counselor/advisor. The Business Launch Specialist provides business advice and counsel to pre-venture business clients as part of a statewide team that focuses on assisting entrepreneurs to evaluate their idea and transition to “in business” companies. He/She will independently obtain and manage a client portfolio that ensures 75 business starts annually, with an emphasis of short-term (30-45 day) starts. The Business Launch Specialist will collaborate and consult with other SBTDC team members and partners to ensure the success of the client. This position will ensure a successful transition of a business client that has started to another SBTDC Counselor or professional partner as appropriate. The Business Launch Specialist will serve as the principal trainer and marketer for a cohort-based startup curriculum throughout assigned region. He/She will develop and maintain relationships with entrepreneurial activities in the assigned region, with the intent to identify entrepreneurial clients to assist in a successful startup. Examples of entrepreneurial activities include university Centers for Entrepreneurship, incubators, accelerators, collaborative working spaces, and pitch competitions.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Professional Knowledge – Knowledge of the specific program area(s). Ability to keep current with developments and trends in areas(s) of expertise.

Program/Project Administration – Ability to coordinate and administer program(s)/project(s), activities and protocols. Ability to manage resources and budget. Ability to prepare and manage contracts and grants. Ability to monitor
activities, and assess risk and quality control associated with the program.

Consultation – Ability to provide advice and counsel. Knowledge of the client programs, organization and culture.
Ability to acknowledge and consider client’s and organization’s range of internal and external priorities in terms of the organization’s mission and goals. Ability to understand the relationships and
interrelationships of all the issues across organizational boundaries. Ability to share knowledge and critical thinking process to achieve mutually agreeable outcomes.

Information Analysis and Decision Making – Ability to review, summarize, and analyze program information, data, business operations, and/or financial statements. Ability to determine and ensure compliance with program objectives, laws and regulations. Ability to choose an effective course of action or develop appropriate solutions and/or reach conclusions. Ability to take action consistent with available facts, constraints, and anticipated
consequences.

Communication and Marketing – Ability to communicate, in written and oral form, detailed and technical program information, guidelines and standards/statutes/codes/regulations to various audiences to ensure that they
understand the information and the message, and to seek compliance. Ability to deliver presentations suited to the characteristics and needs of the audience such as negotiating solutions among different parties.

Leadership – Ability to coordinate, facilitate, and participate in a collaborative approach to the completion of tasks
or assignment

Entrepreneurship ecosystem and/or startup experience preferred.
