Job Description

Arizona State University (ASU), a leading innovator in Higher Education, is looking for a Business Intelligence Analyst (BI Analyst) within the Enterprise Technology (ET) Data Analysis and Visualization team that is ready to dive into an exhilarating role that puts you at the heart of student success. This role will be primarily focused on supporting an Interactive Degree Planner (IDP) application as part of a trio of Credit Mobility products that will provide student learners with the ability to visualize, sequence, and personalize their educational journey like never before. That’s not all, you’ll also play a pivotal role in shaping the future of education by curating enriched data and datasets. Your work will fuel downstream report development, dashboards, and analyses, using a variety of querying techniques.
You’ll be the bridge connecting stakeholders across all levels of the organization. Your comprehensive knowledge base will be instrumental in fostering collaboration and driving our mission forward through your dedication to supporting the development of enterprise applications, providing data insights to translate business needs, and pioneering innovative technical solutions for stakeholders across ASU.

Essential Duties

  • Gathers student related data requirements through interviews, meetings, surveys, process analysis, and review of existing documentation.
  • Works closely and cooperatively with development teams on IDP product design and implementation to make recommendations enhancing product support and usability.
  • Follows best practices for data visualization and uses storytelling to effectively convey information about student degree audit data, assisting with informed decision-making.
  • Creates dashboards and reports to support but not limited to functional and operational stakeholder needs as it relates to the ASU Credit Mobility products.
  • Collaborates with developers and architects to transform business requirements into technical solutions, including creating datasets within ASU’s data warehouse.
  • Utilizes university Business Intelligence (BI) tools (Analytics Websites, Alteryx, Report Builder, Tableau, etc.) to retrieve, evaluate, perform testing/quality assurance, and/or analyze data within a data warehouse or source system.
  • Establishes best practices for student data reporting within an application development team by maintaining documentation, knowledge sharing (documentation, presenting, etc.), and maintaining healthy partnerships.
  • Assists with requirements for integrating new data sources into the data warehouse as needed.
  • Assists with creating and delivering IDP end-user training and documentation.
  • Manages multiple stakeholders to set expectations, hold collaborators accountable to timelines, and communicate transparently.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and stay up-to-date with industry trends to improve BI capabilities.
  • Performs research analysis to understand current performance, analyze trends, and assists in making recommendations for future project performances.
  • Participates in system administration functions including, but not limited to: data validation processes, duplicate resolution processes, system change requests, and system integration/user acceptance testing to ensure ongoing integrity and security of data consistent with university policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a business, information technology or closely related field and two (2) years’ experience in data modeling or database design using SQL or similar language, BI tool use and administration as well as user training/documentation development experience OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Comfort learning new technologies, and agility working with ambiguity
  • Experience in collecting, organizing, synthesizing and analyzing requirements; summarizing findings; developing conclusions and recommendations
  • Experience communicating complex, conceptual, and technical concepts to a variety of audiences presented both in writing and orally
  • Excellent storytelling skills with the ability to convert complex findings into a compelling narrative
  • Familiarly with ETL processes
  • Familiarity with AWS products and tools, including S3 and Redshift
  • Experience with higher education data and degree planning
  • Experience in accurately and reliably interpreting data for determining appropriate action
  • Experience in using problem-solving and metadata skills

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions. Drives University vehicle and/or cart to campus site.
