The Opportunity:

The Business Development Manager I evaluates and assesses the university’s intellectual property for scientific merit, patentability, marketability, and commercialization potential. This position advises the Technology Transfer team on incoming and current inventions, recommends patent protection and commercialization strategies, and assists in the transfer of Physical Sciences technologies to industry partners or newly formed startup companies. Represents the University to the Physical Sciences community.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares market assessments for new inventions and current intellectual property cases in the physical sciences fields, focusing on the evaluation of novelty, market potential, and likely commercialization path.

  • Leads preparation, presentation, and review of intellectual property cases for Technology Commercialization Committee meetings; coordinates review and approval of Committee’s recommendations.

  • Coordinates with inventors, tech writers, and licensing team to prepare summaries of the business opportunities for new inventions and works to advertise technologies available for licensing.

  • Assists with planning and executing strategic marketing activities (scientific conferences, business community initiatives, online promotion and licensing platforms, external marketing vendors, and industry events) to promote university technologies; directs technologies to selected promotional channels.

  • Coordinates with the licensing team to qualify leads during the technology discovery process for licensing and/or sponsored research.

  • Liaises with industry, investors, and entrepreneurs, as well as academic and non-profit organizations; represents the university and the Office of Research to the business, industry, and entrepreneur community in matters relating to university technologies; assists with economic development/outreach programs.

  • Communicates with university stakeholders within innovation, partnership, entrepreneurial, and economic development activity areas in matters relating to university technologies; supports University of Central Florida Research Foundation, Inc. regarding matters related to university technology development and commercialization; supports marketing and communication efforts.

  • Reviews external communication efforts among the licensing and business development teams to facilitate consistent communication with potential licensees and partners.

  • Provides industry and market information for grant/contract proposals leveraging university technologies.

  • Coordinates tracking business development efforts in the intellectual property database.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's or Master's degree and 0+ years of relevant experience. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219(6)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical background and knowledge in the physical sciences, such as materials science, optics, or engineering.

  • Experience in evaluation of physical sciences-related intellectual property; preparation of market assessments; development of promotional strategies and materials; and identification of potential industry partners.

  • Exceptional communication skills, oral and written.

  • Excellent interpersonal/human relations skills.

  • Ability to handle complex assignments.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and time management skills.

This is a Contract and Grant (C&G) funded position. Employment is subject to availability of funding and may cease at the time funding for this employment is depleted.
