Job Description

Corporate Engagement & Strategic Partnerships within the ASU Knowledge Enterprise (KE) is seeking an innovative and enterprising Business Development Director to join their team. In this position, you will focus on the growth of the New Economy Initiative by engaging industry partners and collaborating across the ASU Academic Enterprise, Knowledge Enterprise, and the Learning Enterprise.

Under administrative direction, you will develop, market, manage and spearhead the corporate business development function for special initiatives in KE.  Additionally, you will establish relationships and senior-level business networks locally, regionally, and globally for purposes of business development, partnership management, and revenue generation. It will also be required of you to advance and implement business development activities, seek sources of funding, expands professional networks, and establish policies to successfully generate resources for the University.

This position includes an incentive program giving you the potential to earn more for your ability to generate salary coverage through externally funded, fully awarded sponsored projects at ASU. In addition to the base salary, you have the potential to earn up to an additional $30,000 per year.

Salary Range

$88,550 - $125,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

  • Proactively develops strategies to identify awareness of the ASU initiatives, brand, and assets.
  • Demonstrates expertise in building and maintaining relationships.
  • Develops a solid knowledge base and an internal network of ASU faculty, the research community, and expertise to match companies aligning interests.
  • Promotes a portfolio of offerings for external clients, which taps into the extended talents across the university.  
  • Develops long-term sustainable business relationships with corporate entities and internal resources.
  • Develops strategic relationships with internal departments, schools, etc., to help grow ASU Corporate Relations.
  • Utilizes these relationships to develop strategies and service offerings that enable new revenue-generating opportunities for ASU.
  • Manages client engagements, business development, sales, and consulting activities that resource the most innovative university, ASU.
  • Identifies and pursues business relationships with corporate executives that align with ASU goals and objectives.
  • Identify opportunities for the Learning Enterprise to add value to existing and prospective partners’ workforce development priorities.
  • Creates new business opportunities through customer relationships while also providing value to internal and external clients through various agreements.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing strategies for new business development throughout the lifecycle.
  • Aligns and matches ASU assets to business needs.
  • Provides business development consulting services, either directly or through resources, to ASU faculty and staff.
  • Establishes, implements, and evaluates business procedures for the corporate engagement community.
  • Champions the use and increased adoption of CRM tools across campus.
  • Develops, maintains, and reports on metrics to gauge the business’s social and economic impact on the University and community leaders.
  • Oversees and reports on the financial management of the partnerships and metrics assigned.
  • Travels to corporate sites (domestic and international) to drive collaborative activities.
  • Fosters links enterprises and scientific or professional partners to improve product development, technology transfer, and commercialization.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a business related discipline or technology-related field AND eight (8) years of related experience specifically in business development, marketing, and program operations, including three (3) years of supervisory/management; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

Evidence of a Master’s degree in business-related discipline or technology-related field AND six (6) years of related experience specifically in business development, marketing, and program operations, including three years of supervisory/management AND two (2) years of global business experience with solid experience working in technology or innovation-based industries.

Working Environment

This position is located in Scottsdale, AZ, and includes travel to other campuses.

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and are subject to the resolution of conflicts.
