Business Analyst, Process Improvement

POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Business Analyst plays a pivotal role in the strategic development and execution of key initiatives within the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. This multifaceted position encompasses the establishment of modern business planning methodologies, facilitation of faculty compensation initiatives, data analysis, process enhancement, and collaboration with a diverse range of stakeholders. The business analyst also focuses on implementing Six Sigma and lean management practices to optimize various school and university operations.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Lead the faculty compensation analysis effort. Maintain and improve a robust faculty compensation tracking and management database which combines recent and historical data from various sources from faculty affairs, finance, research administration, facilities, external benchmarking data, and other sources. Manage a robust online reporting and tracking system, and work with departments to annually analyze faculty compensation based on departmental metric plans and SOM guidelines to match compensation against national benchmarks, internal metrics, and relevant performance measures. (20%)
  • Apply business planning techniques and approaches to planning for potential initiatives and business opportunities, including market analysis and assessing the revenue potential. These opportunities span educational, research, and commercial ventures. Work closely with the Director for Strategic Business Initiatives to ensure plans are consistent with SOM strategic approaches and planning. (20%)
  • Develop automated reports and dashboards using Tableau, PowerBI, and more tools. Offer data support to executive stakeholders, address escalations, and respond to inquiries. Execute analytical projects through statistical analysis. (10%)
  • Collaborate with various departments and teams across campus on Robotic Process Automation (RPA) technologies. Evaluate RPA candidates/processes, conduct end-user meetings, and coordinate with developers to design new workflows. Maintain process documentation and provide support for process submissions, guiding employees to relevant resources. (20%)
  • Document and distribute materials for process improvement, data management, and automation within the designated group. Act as the primary point of contact for process submission inquiries, guiding employees, and sustaining engagement. (15%)
  • Design and implement new work processes and operations using Six Sigma and lean process management techniques. Collaborate across multiple SOM departments and CWRU offices to enhance efficiency and cost-effectiveness. (10%)

    CONTACTS

    Department: Daily contact with the chief of staff, director for strategic business initiatives. Frequently contact with finance and planning staff; marketing and communications staff; research administration staff; office of faculty affairs; office of grants and contract; clinical and basic science departments/centers; school administrative departments; and business managers/administrators and school department administrators.

    University: Occasionally work with other schools on specific business initiatives. Contact the procurement office, student employment office, office of sponsored projects administration, and UTech teams on specific projects.

    External: Contact with potential external/commercial customers, IT consultant companies, IT vendors, university affiliates, and other schools of medicine across the country.

    Students: Occasional contact with students to carry out job functions.

     

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    This position has no supervisory responsibilities. May direct the work of students.

     

    QUALIFICAITONS

    Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree and 3 or more years of related experience required OR Master's degree and 1 or more yers of related resperience required. Experience in data analysis, process improvement, and compensation structure analysis desired. Academic experience desired.

     

    REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Outstanding verbal/written communication, collaboration, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in data integration processes, tools, performance assessment, and scalability evaluation.
  • Proficiency in handling large and complex datasets and databases.
  • Experienced in presenting and translating complex datasets to senior management and executive leadership.
  • Ability to actively learn and understand the implications of new information for problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
  • Expertise in project management, particularly across diverse stakeholders and departments within complex organizations.
  • The ability to translate business requirements into well-defined processes and development requirements.
  • Competence in engaging with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face-to-face, fostering positive working relationships.
  • Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  • Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and co-workers face to face.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    General office environment.

    This position is eligible for hybrid work arrangement up to two remote days per week at the discretion of the department. New employees may begin a hybrid schedule upon approval from the supervisor, successful completion of an orientation period and signing the remote work checklist certification form.
