About the Department
 

One of the first departments founded at the University of Chicago was the Department of Chemistry. Since its inception, the Department of Chemistry has embodied the University's central mission of excellence in both research and teaching. The University of Chicago has been the recipient of more than 73 Nobel Prize recipients, 15 of which came from the Department of Chemistry. Our current faculty has considerable strength in inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, as well as in interdisciplinary research that delves into biology, physics, and materials science. The Department is a community of over 500, including faculty, students, postdoctoral scholars, and staff. Our academic support group operates the graduate and undergraduate educational programs for the department. Close student-faculty interactions have been a hallmark of our department for over a century. These have fostered a unique intellectual environment that both ensures superb graduate education and continues to produce important and exciting scientific discoveries.


Job Summary
 

The job provides professional support and solves straightforward problems for a broad range of business operations and academic activities. May develop and implement office procedures and policies and ensures compliance. May prepare and monitor the budget for a unit.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all aspects of the appointments and reappointment process for postdoctoral scholars/fellows, visiting scholars, and guest scientists.

  • Reviews all submitted materials for appointments and ensures materials, such as the mentoring plan and offer letter, meet PSD Dean's Office requirements.

  • Serves as a liaison to the Office of International affairs to resolve visa issues and serves as the primary contact for post-docs to counsel on work/life related issues like benefits, visa processing, University IDs, housing, etc.

  • Assists the Department Administrator with the recruitment process for staff positions.

  • Serves as a liaison to the Office of International affairs to resolve visa issues.

  • Proactively manage & maintain employee’s files in Box.

  • Assists Departmental Administrator in the role as department liaison with PSD HR Services and Dean’s Office.

  • Work with faculty to identify postdoc and student employment needs for their labs.

  • Collaborate with the Department Administrator in support of meeting the department’s objectives as needed.

  • Responsible for student’s workday time approvals.

  • Point of contact for all student employment-related questions.

  • Works with Department Administrator on determining staff needs.

  • Performs some routine and complex assignments for the unit usually in the areas of finance, event planning or support services. Initiate the hiring process of students and staff for a unit, which includes the processing of payroll.

  • Researches and analyzes data to create reports, and may create other reports for grants and contracts.

  • Perform other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
