Position Summary

Salary- $85,620 - $95,002.  annually depending on experience. Regular attendance is required to meet business and customer needs
This position will ensure that existing building systems are installed and operating as required to meet the operational needs of the facility and to ensure the highest level of energy efficiency throughout the General Fund Office & Classroom sector of campus. 

This position will lead technical efforts to solve complex maintenance, operational and energy efficiency challenges through the application of existing building commissioning (Retro / Re-Commissioning, as applicable). The Existing Building Commissioning (EB Cx) Process is applied at Michigan State University to document building function, assess performance, propose measures for optimization and address issues found through comprehensive testing and analysis.  The process consists of a highly organized approach that integrates elements of preventative maintenance; automated fault detection and diagnostics (AFDD); development of test protocols; collaborating with Planning, Design and Construction and Maintenance Services; energy calculations, building systems analysis, staff training and management of deficiency reports. This position will project manage, administrate and execute focused EB Cx and energy analysis/optimization projects in a "building performance zone" consisting of MSU General Academic Facilities (primarily made up of offices and classrooms). The position will be responsible for carrying out in-house EB Cx field activities; train/utilize student technical aides for project support; conduct analysis of facility operational and energy data; generate project reports; support the identification of energy conservation measure (ECM) opportunities for annual funding proposals; troubleshoot and analyze HVAC/building automation system issues; aid in the planning of AFDD protocol for newly construction/renovated facilities; and support the training of operations and maintenance staff.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge normally acquired in four years of college, technical or vocational school in mechanical, electrical, HVAC/energy or applied engineering, energy modeling/analysis, mathematics, statistics or a related field; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in operations and maintenance of high-performance buildings; possession of three or more industry certifications, or an equivalent certification course; completion of all of the APPA Institute for Facilities Management courses (four areas of coursework - General Administration; Operations & Maintenance; Planning, Design & Construction; Energy & Utilities); or an equivalent combination of education and experience; may require a license in a specified field.


Desired Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical or HVAC / energy systems engineering technology; experience with development and review of construction documents / creation of HVAC control system sequences of operation / energy data analysis; advanced working knowledge of HVAC control systems, building automation systems, energy management information systems, utility billing; strong working knowledge of construction project document management systems / facility management systems / utility billing systems; demonstrated experience in the use of HVAC testing/adjusting/balancing instrumentation, means and methods; demonstrated experience in analysis and troubleshooting of HVAC / control systems; demonstrated experience in estimation of repairs for facility operations related systems and equipment.
