The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest undergraduate college at Cornell and consists of approximately 4,600 undergraduates, 1,370 graduate students, 685 faculty, 40 academic departments, and 300 staff. The college receives almost 35,000 undergraduate applications per year.
The Department of Physics is renowned for the strength and versatility of its program, the breadth of its training and the reach of its influence is unsurpassed in many areas. Famous for its Nobel Prize-winning work in low-temperature physics and theoretical astrophysics, current research areas include high-energy particle physics, cosmology and astrophysics, accelerator physics, X-ray physics, physics education research, biological physics, soft condensed matter physics, quantum materials, and nanostructure physics. Located in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Physics Department is one of the largest units in the college and consists of 40 tenure-track faculty, approximately 180 PhD students, 70 undergraduate majors, multiple research centers, and many research collaborations at Cornell and around the world.

The Building Manager/Undergraduate Lab Assistant serves a varied group of constituents. As such, this role should be able to build consensus among stakeholders, work collaboratively and supportively as part of a team while being an independent self-starter, and interested and willing to learn basics of introductory-level Physics teaching labs.

In support of the teaching and academic mission of the Physics Department, the Undergraduate Lab Assistant works closely with the Introductory Lab Manager and the Demonstration Manager, collaborating daily to serve the undergraduate laboratory classrooms and introductory lecture demonstrations in the department. In collaboration with other departmental technical and teaching staff, this position coordinates with respective faculty on lab instructional requirements and helps train teaching assistants on equipment as necessary.  They assist with the evaluation, calibration, troubleshooting and maintenance of all mechanical, electronic, and optical equipment and provide occasional repairs of lab set-ups, track equipment, and set up lab stations in the classroom setting.  This position may set-up repair and modify computer-based experiments. In collaboration with and by request from the demonstration manager, this position assists with lecture demonstration set-up and takedown and assists with providing demonstration materials for community outreach and engagement on behalf of the department. Will have primary responsibility for some labs as designated by the Undergraduate Lab Manager and will work closely with instructors to supply materials and repair classroom experiments. Responsible for acting as backup to Undergraduate Lab Manager and Demonstration Manager, must learn and understand set-ups for lecturer demonstrations and classroom lab set-ups, will devise system with this team to stand in for each other in times of need or absence.

As the Building Manager, this position has a dotted reporting line to the Director of Facilities in the College of Arts and Sciences and serves Rockefeller Hall occupants with direction and support from the Director of Facilities, College of Arts and Sciences, and the Introductory Laboratory Manager, Department of Physics, collaborating regularly.  This position manages and communicates all aspects of maintenance, new and ongoing construction projects, project planning, emergency maintenance response and infrastructure issues with tenant departments and units operating in Rockefeller Hall (Asian American Studies Program, Asian Studies, Feminist, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program, John S. Knight Institute, Latina/o Studies Program, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Studies Program, Milstein Program in Technology & Humanity, and Physics). This position provides oversight for all key and lock programming for building users including faculty, staff, and graduate student teaching assistants. This position acts as safety and security coordinator for building stakeholders and enters and tracks requests in the university trades and shops ticketing system. This position regularly coordinates with Endowed Zone facilities management, state and federal inspectors, and with the Director of Facilities for the College of Arts and Sciences as required. 

Required Qualifications:

·       Ability to work independently in busy environment and function effectively as part of a team.

·       Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills are essential.

·       Good judgment and ability to organize shifting priorities.

·       Knowledge and understanding of building maintenance as well as trade support is also helpful.

Preferred Qualifications:

·       A working knowledge of basic physics principles and interest in learning more to serve the needs of the department.

·       Demonstrated experience in maintenance, troubleshooting, interfacing and repair of current computer systems, file servers and networks is helpful.

·       Experience in the areas of electronics, digital and analog circuitry, mechanical fabrication, and optics.

·       Experience working in a higher education setting, a plus.
