Job Summary

Building Manager of an undergraduate residential dormitory (House). Responsible for all physical resources operations in the House.


Position Description

Oversees the maintenance & operations of the House to provide a safe home for undergraduate students and other members of the House community.

Works closely with Faculty Dean(s) and Resident Dean to provide a smoothly functioning House.

Regularly interacts with student residents, responding to occupant building problems/requests promptly and resolving them quickly.

Works with Area Manager across a range of areas including budget management, vendor selection, & managing relationships with many Harvard departments.

Directs day-to-day activity of custodial staff, building trades, & contractors to assure timely and cost-effective completion of work.

Maintains the security of the buildings through proper attention to access control, security procedures, and the condition of locking devices.

Reviews computer-based HVAC, security, and fire systems; monitors safety compliance, coordinates inspections, and ensures compliance with codes & regulations.

Works closely with OPR & P and Harvard University Office for Sustainability staff to implement best operations and maintenance practices, and to actively participate in FAS greenhouse gas and energy reduction efforts and goals for House.

Responds to emergency situations as appropriate during both working and off-hours.

Occasional planned weekend work including student move-in and move-out & Summer School move-in.


Basic Qualifications

5+ years experience in the management of physical facilities, including staff supervision experience.

Demonstrated experience with building automated control systems including security and HVAC.


Additional Qualifications and Skills

Advanced education and/or technical training beyond high school strongly preferred.


Excellent communication skills; ability to assess needs, set priorities, and deal with stressful situations. Computer skills necessary, including proficiency in work order systems, daily maintenance, invoice processing, budget, and payroll management. Demonstrated experience with building automated control systems including security and HVAC. Must enjoy working with students. Experience in the management of physical facilities in a University setting preferred.

Critical/Essential Status
During emergency situations and severe inclement weather, this position is designated as essential and critical to the operations of the FAS.


Physical Requirements

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, perform daily physical activity, including walking to and from various buildings, climbing multiple sets of stairs, and walking from room to room on each floor to inspect the physical condition of the building, required.
