The School of Medicine is the largest research school in the university, with an annual budget in excess of $700 million, 30+ academic departments and many smaller departments. The School has over 4,500 full-time faculty and staff and more than 1,000 students enrolled in MD and graduate programs.

The Budget and Financial Analysis Director, who reports to the Associate Dean of Finance, will direct and manage the annual budget process and day to day budget issues. Will develop and implement new budget and funding/commitment processes. Will also develop a rolling or multiyear budget process that builds upon the current annual process. Will also manage all budget related activities for the central Pitt CFO and will coordinate efforts with the Accounting and Financial Reporting Director and Manager of Faculty Compensation to align objectives and reporting. Will complete various ad hoc financial analysis as needed. This role will be the main point of contact for KPI/dashboards used by central School of Medicine (SOM) and its departments. Will assist departments with completing annual chair reviews regarding budget and financial matters. 



Job Summary

Oversees financial and budgetary operations and ensures compliance of all activities with all policies, procedures, and regulations. Prepares and reconciles budgets, allocates funds, and oversees the budget modification process and audit scheduling. Establishes goals, implementation strategies, and financial systems.


Essential Functions 

The Budget and Financial Analysis Director will review the current budget process and implement improvements as needed to increase efficiency and understanding of process by departments. The incumbent will transform, as needed, the current budget system/process for changes being implemented at the direction of the Dean. This role will direct, coordinate and complete the annual budget process with School of Medicine (SOM) departments and takes ownership of the day-to-day budgeting activities. Will work with the Accounting and Financial Reporting Director to ensure alignment of goals and budget/actual reporting. The incumbent will develop an understanding of the current budget process and Excel files and will assume ownership of that process from the Associate Dean while improving upon that model as needed based on feedback from users. 

This position will manage ad hoc projects and financial analysis as needed as the Dean has many initiatives that require analysis and implementation plans to be developed. An example is changing our current effort reporting/grant salary distribution system from being only university-based to a Total Professional Effort system that would incorporate the clinical compensation and effort.

This position will be the main source of contact between SOM departments and Dean's Office for KPI/dashboard issues and questions. Will assist SOM departments with the financial/budget components of the annual department chair reviews while improving the KPI/dashboard/chair review process by working with SOM departments and Dean's Office. 

This position has the opportunity to work in a Hybrid schedule that consists of 3 days On-Campus in the Oakland office and 2 days Remote each week. Candidate must be within commuting distance of the university.


Physical Effort 

Physical effort to include traveling to and from buildings on campus; minimal lifting is required. Position is generally sedentary, required to sit for extended periods of time, and perform extensive work on computer.
