    Position description

    Area of Specialization / Responsibilities:

The BSL3 Specialist will be responsible for oversight of all activities in the BSL3. They will implement biosafety, security, and common laboratory standard operating procedures and processes in the BSL3. This person will also act as liaison with the UCSF High Containment Laboratory Oversight Group.

The Lab Manager/BSL3 Specialist will also be involved in BSL3-relevant projects, including regular meetings with PIs/postdocs, transfer of samples into the BSL3 for culture, infection, and experimental perturbations, and downstream preparation of samples (e.g. droplet encapsulation or cell fixation) for project-specific assays, such as CyTOF and scRNAseq.

Ideally the BSL3 Specialist will also pursue their own research projects under the mentorship of UCSF faculty with BSL3 research programs. Depending on bandwidth and number of active BSL3 projects, an additional technician (SRA2) could be hired into the BSL3 Junior CoLab under the supervision and management of the High Containment Lab Manager, and to assist in processing of samples for project-specific assays. The BSL3 Specialist will also expand viruses in cell lines, perform titrations and QC, provide titrated viral stocks, and consult in various aspects of infection and analysis.

Aerosol pathogens that cause disease in immunocompetent individuals must be studied under biosafety level 3 (BSL3) biocontainment. BSL3 procedures must follow strict guidelines to be safe, and thus require extensive development to ensure biocontainment. Additionally, extensive training is necessary for experimentalists to work effectively and safely in the BSL3. The current COVID-19 outbreak highlights the need to have the capacity for multiple investigators to study BSL3 aerosol pathogens. The BSL3 Specialist will coordinate BSL3 experiments between multiple investigators, perform BSL3-level experiments, and train laboratory staff in BSL3 procedures. This individual will also manage the BSL3 facility and be responsible for identifying new research priorities and relevant equipment for the facility.

    Required Qualifications:

    • PhD in Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, or related field.
    • 2 years experience designing and performing BSL3 experiments. 3 years preferred.
    • Experience training other individuals to work at BSL3.
    • Experience with molecular genomics technologies.
    • Evidence of superb organizational skills and ability to pay attention to detail.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication, including writing of research manuscripts, and scientific poster and oral presentations.
    • Previous experience managing a BSL3 facility.
    • Detail oriented; strong analytical and research skills using online sources and databases; able to seek and synthesize information.

Please apply online at: https://aprecruit.ucsf.edu/JPF03908 with CV and contact information for three references. Applicant materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission. The selected candidate must meet all of the qualifications at the time of appointment.
