The Academic Advisor serves as a staff member in the Fowler College of Business Center for Student Success and is assigned to the BSBA Online Degree Completion Program. Under general supervision, the position provides individual and group information and advising for a student population of approximately 400 undergraduates in BSBA Online Degree Completion Program including students in the microsite programs. The position works with the Center for Student Success, Global Campus, the BSBA Online Program and Admissions Coordinator, and the BSBA Online Degree Completion Program Director in the development of policies and procedures.
The position will be responsible for the academic advising of an assigned caseload of prospective and current students in the BSBA Online Degree Completion Program including the microsites. Under the general supervision of the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, the position will advise students through individual appointments, virtual sessions, over the telephone and email. The position will counsel academically at-risk students and those not making progress towards degree to identify possible solutions and make referrals to appropriate College and campus resources.
The position works with the Fowler College of Business Center for Student Success and the Global Campus student success team to coordinate orientation, recruiting activities, academic support, and campus engagement opportunities The Academic Advisor will also serve as the liaison to local community colleges to improve student transition to San Diego State University. The position will also work with the BSBA Online Degree Completion Program Director to provide information to students on any missing prep for the major and lower division requirements that must be completed prior to graduation.
The position is an integral part of the Center for Student Success team and will provide staffing support at related events and assist other staff members as needed for successful maintenance of unit goals. Some evening and weekend hours will be required.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before 6/30/2022 with the possibility for reappointment. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
Education and Experience
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A Master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
- Three years of experience working in a college or university's admissions, advising, evaluations, registrar, or other student service related office.
- Experience presenting to diverse audiences of varying size.
- Experience in student advising.
- Professional experience in recruiting prospective students for admission to a university and/or an academic program.
- Experience explaining and interpreting academic policies governing a public or private university either in person, virtually, on the phone or via email.
- Experience working in an academic setting.
- Experience in working with students in online degree programs as well as adult learners.
- Master's degree preferred.
- Ability to interact effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff and to work as a member of a team.
- Experience using MS Office Suite and familiarity with web-based applications.
- Flexibility, and attention to detail are required.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Must maintain confidentiality of student information and records.
Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $4,304 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,304 - $6,120 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
