Description
Tin Mountain is a non-profit environmental education and conservation research organization that promotes an appreciation of the natural environment among children, adults, and families through hands on programs in the schools, at camps, and in the community to demonstrate responsible stewardship of natural resources through land protection, research, and sustainable forestry, agriculture, and energy. We are seeking two Brook Trout Ecology and Stream Restoration Interns for our summer 2022 field season. One internship will run from June through mid-late August, while the second intern will be hired to stay from June through September. Tin Mountain has been conducting stream restoration activities throughout the Mount Washington Valley since 2010. Interns will collect baseline information on study streams prior to treatment with large wood additions, as well as conduct post-treatment assessments on previously treated sites. The Tin Mountain Brook Trout Ecology and Stream Restoration intern duties include: researching the influence of adding large woody material to first and second-order forested streams, collecting data pertaining to instream habitat measurements, benthic macroinvertebrate sampling and identification, and electro-fishing. Interns will also have the opportunity to assist with large wood additions in August and September, depending on availability and stream conditions. This project involves strenuous work as well as extensive data collection on physical and biological attributes of streams, water chemistry, and fish populations. The interns will work with volunteers and staff to collect/analyze data and report results. More information about our research program can be found here: https://www.tinmountain.org/program-descriptions/research-monitoring/ The trout ecology internships will begin early June. One internship will complete in August, the other will conclude in late September. Compensation is $1,000/month. Shared housing is provided. Interns must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccinations will be required. COVID-19 safety protocols will be followed to ensure the safety of all staff and interns. Tin Mountain strives to provide a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment in which to learn about and explore the natural world. Our doors and our lands are open and available to everyone who wants to participate. Tin Mountain Conservation Center staff, board of trustees, and members are united in our passion for environmental conservation, education, and research as well as our mutual trust and respect for each other and the world in which we live.
