Job Description

The Sensor Visualization Branch Head position in the Sensor Intelligence & Visualization Division (SIV) is responsible for defining the strategic direction, growing and developing capabilities in the processing, analyzing, and visualizing data and information derived from single and multiple sensors of various modalities. The branch head is responsible for the branch's strategic direction, growth, sponsor outreach, team member growth and management, project execution, branch technical knowledge and capabilities, and adherence to GTRI policies. The branch head will support the Department of Defense (DoD) with specialties in electronic warfare, novel soldier interfaces, EO/IR scene generation, armor active protection, smart cities and smart installations, light propagation and turbulence, and EO/IR and RF signature modeling.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

  • Define strategic direction and growth opportunities in sensor processing and data/information communication and visualization.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for sponsorship and collaboration.
  • Conduct and direct business development activities to include: sponsor engagement, showcasing branch capabilities to internal and external organizations, support sponsor tours, visits, and technical meetings.
  • Oversee and manage branch budgets, resources, and compliance with the institute's policies and procedures.
  • Oversee and manage sponsored research in the branch to ensure successful research programs based on sponsor requirements.
  • Support branch operations and coordination across branches within the division and other laboratories of GTRI.
  • Train and mentor branch members, including research faculty and both undergraduate and graduate students, to develop expertise in algorithms, data fusion, sensor fusion, machine learning, and data analysis, including facilitating the publication of novel research activities, professional development, and training opportunities.
  • Oversee, author, and contribute to proposals and white papers for sustained branch growth.
  • Conduct administrative actions, including the recruitment, hiring, and termination of branch personnel, execution of performance appraisals, development and execution of performance improvement plans, and review and approval of employee timesheets.
  • Serve as the division and laboratory's subject matter expert for algorithms, data fusion, sensor fusion, machine learning, genetic programming, and data analysis.
  • Participate in and lead efforts to advance processing and communication of sensor-derived information and complex algorithms to human users advancing sponsor fielded systems' capabilities.
  • Represent the division and laboratory as a subject matter expert at consortiums, symposiums, and expositions.
  • Ensure that all technical work is performed and documented to organizational and DoD standards based on project requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Bachelor’s degree and Master's degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Systems Engineering or a related technical field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelor’s degree and Master's degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree and Bachelor’s degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Bachelor’s degree and Master's degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Doctoral degree and Bachelor’s degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field, and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience leading small to mid-sized teams of research engineers and technical staff
  • Experience collaborating, organizing, teaming, and communicating with a diverse team of government sponsors, GTRI researchers, and other stakeholders to facilitate project performance
  • Ability to create and deliver technical presentations effectively
  • Experience with algorithm design, development, implementation, analysis, and test
  • Experience with software development best practices, version control, etc.
  • Experience with technical management of software development

Preferred Qualifications
  • Secret Clearance
  • Experience with multiple computer programming languages and fluency with GIT
  • Experience with various systems modeling and simulation frameworks used within the DoD

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.


Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
