UC Upward Bound is seeking to hire two Bound Life Specialists to work with youth in Greater Cincinnati who are underserved and marginalized by systems. As a Bound Life Specialist, you will provide ongoing mentoring support and guidance, by establishing a positive relationship, modeling appropriate behaviors and improving the youth’s socio-emotional skills to best improve overall outcomes for academic success.  

The Bound Life Specialists provide and model structured academic, emotional and personal/social support for their students assigned. Bound Life Specialists will work individually with each student assigned in the community on life skills to help them through the many challenges and barriers this population face. Additionally, the Bound Life Specialists work closely with the student’s guardian and others specified to best guide the student in their goals to overall success in the Upward Bound program to best prepare them for life beyond Upward Bound.
 

The Bound Life Specialist also actively assist in recruiting new students to participate in the program by conducting recruiting sessions at the University of Cincinnati Upward Bound program targeted schools.

This is a unique opportunity to collaborate with a number of different community agencies, social service agencies and teachers/administrators in schools. Candidates must be available during evenings and some weekends for program functions and overall program support. Must have reliable transportation.
 

Funding for these positions are based upon the availability of external funds.

• Assess students' academic needs and proficiency, connect student to appropriate resources, and provide ongoing support as needed.
• Liaison with campus Accessibility Resources.
• Coordinate with faculty, advisors and staff to provide and support innovative programs that help students succeed.
• Coordinate tutoring for students of all skills levels needing remedial instruction assistance.
• Ensure policies and procedures are in place to address academic integrity. 
• Serve as liaison between faculty/other department personnel and student to coordinate approved absences. 
• May assist faculty to create assessment rubrics and set attainment targets for the different course learning outcomes.
• May work with students on individualized educational plans and on development of learning skills.
• May work with student to identify accommodations needed to meet learning skills.
• May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).

Bachelor’s Degree

Three (3) years of relevant experience to include previous teaching or tutoring experience.

• Bachelor’s degree in education, educational assessment, counseling, psychology, social work or related field.  
• Successful applicants should be highly organized, have strong interpersonal and communication skills, mentor programs, persuasive and strong negotiation skills.
• Advanced Degree in education, social work, psychology or related field.
• Experience working with underserved youth.      

• Office environment/no specific unusual physical or environmental demands.
