Job Description

BOOKSELLER, MIT Press (part-time, 18 hrs/wk.), to perform varied and sometimes complex customer service, sales, merchandising, and clerical duties in a fast-paced book retail environment situated on the MIT campus. Will greet and assist customers in finding and purchasing books in person, over the phone, and through email; assist visitors in locating resources at MIT and in the surrounding neighborhood; monitor and fulfill orders placed through the store website, including shipping orders; perform cashier duties using the store's point-of-sale system; develop knowledge of MIT Press publications and related subject areas; assist with opening and closing the bookstore; represent the bookstore at off-site retail events; present a neat and attractive sales floor, including accurately shelving books, maintaining and creating book displays, organizing overstock, and dusting/cleaning fixtures; use daily sales reports and the store inventory system to reorder and receive books and other merchandise; receive books from an invoice into the store inventory system; enter bibliographic data into the inventory database; file; pull books from sections and pack them for return; tally and record daily sales and prepare bank deposits; make campus and other local deliveries; and perform other duties as needed.


Job Requirements

REQUIRED: high school diploma or its equivalent; strong organizational and communication skills; attention to detail; working knowledge of Windows, Excel, and Outlook or other email program; ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented environment; and discretion with confidential information/situations. PREFERRED: bookstore or other retail experience; familiarity with MIT and MIT Press publications; interest in scholarly or nonfiction publishing; and basic understanding of the Press's scholarly disciplines (e.g., science, technology, linguistics, computer science, design). Work conditions: standing for extended periods of time; regularly and repeatedly lifting weights of up to 40lbs; climbing ladders; and bending, crouching, and kneeling.
This is a part-time (18 hrs/wk.) in-person, non-benefits-eligible position located in Cambridge, MA.

Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
Current MIT Press Bookstore hours are Monday through Friday 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. Hours are subject to change as business dictates.
