With more than 260 major buildings enhancing the magnificent landscape of the Ithaca campus, approximately 1,000 highly talented and dedicated staff serve as steward of the campus resources and operations.
The Utilities section of Energy and Sustainability operates the University energy infrastructure system on a 24 hour, 365 day per year basis. Production facilities include a combined heat and power facility which provides both the steam for heat and electricity for campus. All of the water for campus is provided by a university owned potable water filtration plant. Electricity from the local utility is fed through a university owned electric substation. Utilities is also responsible for all of the distribution and collection systems located on campus including steam, chilled water, electricity, potable water and wastewater.

   


We are searching for a motivated and hardworking individual to join our Central Energy Plant as a Boiler Operator/WTP Technician Trainee (Grade 3), OR a Boiler Operator/WTP Technician (Grade 5).


The qualifications of the candidate will determine the appointment at the Grade 3 or Grade 5 level.


Any individual hired into the trainee position will be expected to obtain the skills and knowledge necessary to move to the next level, Boiler Operator WTP Technician (Grade 5), which includes demonstrating the ability to fully meet expectations of a Boiler Operator position, and work independently on shift.


This work is performed on a 24-hour rotating shift basis. When not in a regular shift rotation, the employee will fall under all rules and conditions of a relief operator.

POSITION SUMMARY

Appointment into a Grade 3 Trainee or Grade 5 Technician position is dependent upon the incumbent’s skills, education, and experience. Responsibilities for each role are listed below:

Boiler Operator/WTP Technician Trainee :  Assist Senior Plant Operators in the operation of all central energy plant facilities and infrastructure associated with the production of steam, chilled water and electricity to serve the entire campus. Work closely with Senior Plant Operators to operate all boilers, heat recovery steam generators (HRSG’s) and associated auxiliary equipment in order to keep the boilers/HRSG’s operating in a safe, reliable and efficient manner, at demand loads, at all times. Works with the Senior Plant Operator, starts and shuts down boilers/HRSG’s as needed, maintains fuel feed to boilers/HRSG’s, operates the chilled water (CW) system, performs water chemistry testing, doses chemicals, regularly checks auxiliaries, etc. Assists Senior Plant Operator with all aspects of the operation of the chilled water, steam and electrical systems. Incumbents hired into the trainee position are expected to obtain the skills and knowledge necessary to move to the next level, Boiler Operator WTP Technician, Grade 5 which includes demonstrating the ability to fully meet expectations of a Boiler Operator position and work independently on shift.

Boiler Operator/WTP Technician : Has responsibility in the operation of all plant facilities and infrastructure associated with the production and distribution of steam, chilled water and electricity to the entire campus. Independently operates all boilers, heat recovery steam generators (HRSG’s) and associated auxiliary equipment in order to keep the boilers/HRSG’s operating in a safe, reliable and efficient manner, at demand loads, during all shifts. Working with the Plant Operator, starts and shuts down boilers/HRSG’s as needed, maintains fuel feed to boilers/HRSG’s, operates the chilled water (CW) system, performs water chemistry testing, doses chemicals, removes ash, regularly checks auxiliaries, etc. Assists Plant Operator with all aspects of the operation of the chilled water, steam and electrical systems.

Required Qualifications

Boiler Operator/WTP Technician Trainee:

  • High School diploma and ability to maintain a valid NYS drivers license.

  • Demonstrated experience and/or training in a relevant technical field.

  • Must be able to work rotating shift and overtime. Strong desire to work in the Central Energy Plant and learn the associated equipment and systems. Dedication to providing safe, reliable, and efficient energy services. (Power, Steam, Chilled Water).

  • Demonstrated ability to give and receive feedback, communicate honestly, listen, respect others, learn from mistakes, set high goals and achieve them, overcome obstacles, uses time effectively, sets priorities, and participates effectively on teams.

  • Is highly motivated and exhibits innovation, good judgment and reliability in the work place.

  • Ability to work in an environment that includes high ambient temperature, noise, and dust.

  • Ability to safely work with chemicals, high temperature/pressure steam, confined spaces, and other potential hazards.

  • Must be able to climb stairs, ladders, and work with heights.

  • Must be able to obtain Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification within three (3) years from starting the position.

Boiler Operator/WTP Technician:

  • High School diploma with three (3) years previous experience operating equipment and systems, such as industrial boilers, fuel feed systems, chillers and rotating equipment. This includes experience in boiler water chemistry and associated equipment required or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must possess a demonstrated ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and correct operational issues.

  • Dedication to providing safe, reliable, and efficient energy services. (Power, Steam, Chilled Water).

  • Demonstrated ability to give and receive feedback, communicate honestly, listen, respect others, learn from mistakes, set high goals and achieve them, overcome obstacles, uses time effectively, sets priorities, and participates effectively on teams.

  • Is highly motivated and exhibits innovation, good judgment and reliability in the work place.

  • Demonstrated proficiency and knowledge of the skills necessary to perform minor maintenance activities. This includes use of such things as hand tools, wrenches, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

Boiler Operator/WTP Technician Trainee:

  • Previous experience operating equipment and systems in an industrial setting, such as industrial boilers, fuel feed systems, chillers and rotating equipment, and/or experience in boiler water chemistry and associated equipment.

  • Demonstrated proficiency and knowledge of the skills necessary to perform minor maintenance activities. This includes use of such things as use of hand tools, wrenches, etc.

  • Additional education e.g. Associates Degree in technical field or equivalent experience preferred. Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification.

Boiler Operator/WTP Technician:

  • Additional education e.g. Associates Degree in technical field or equivalent experience preferred.

This is a bargaining unit position within the International Union of Operating Engineers. Minimum hire rate for Grade 3 is $25.20/hr, and for Grade 5 is $29.47/hr.
