The Immuno-Oncology Informatics Group at The Ohio State University is seeking a Senior Bioinformatics Specialist to join our dynamic team, who is proficient in conducting complex single-cell multi-omics and next-generation sequencing data analysis, with developing and managing bioinformatics computing platforms. This role involves the analysis of large-scale biological datasets, the design, and implementation of bioinformatics tools, databases, and pipelines, as well as providing high-level bioinformatics support to our research projects to collaborate with researchers to advance our scientific understanding.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement advanced bioinformatics workflows and pipelines for the analysis of cutting-edge next-generation sequencing data, including, but not limited to, single-cell RNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, and whole-genome sequencing.

  • Develop and maintain robust computing platforms, including cloud-based solutions with Azure and AWS, to support our research and clinical projects. Ensure stringent compliance with PHI and HIPAA regulations.

  • Construct and sustain our bioinformatics infrastructure, which includes databases and application tools, to facilitate seamless research operations.

  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in bioinformatics resources and tools, and proactively recommend and implement improvements to existing processes and workflows.

  • Exhibit expertise in data extraction from patient charts and Redcap, database building, and data visualization tools. Ensure clinical trial data is in strict compliance with PHI and HIPAA.

  • Collaborate efficiently with research teams to define project goals, design experiments, and interpret results, fostering a productive and innovative research environment.

  • Provide domain expertise in statistical analysis and data integration across multiple platforms and data types, thereby enhancing the quality and impact of our research.

  • Contribute meaningfully to manuscript writing and grant applications by providing insightful bioinformatics analysis results and figures.

  • Mentor junior bioinformatics staff and provide training to research teams as needed, promoting a culture of continuous learning and development.

  • Ensure data quality and reproducibility by adhering to best practices and established protocols, thereby maintaining the integrity of our research.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field. Master's degree or Ph. D preferred.

  • Minimum of two years of related experience, ideally within an academic or research institution, with a focus on implementing bioinformatics workflows and pipelines for next-generation sequencing data analysis. 2-4 years of related experience preferred.

  • Proficiency in bioinformatics tools, databases, and programming languages, particularly R, Python, and SQL. Familiarity with data visualization tools and modern workflow languages, such as Nextflow or Snakemake, is highly desirable.

  • Experience in full-stack development of bioinformatics applications, including front-end and back-end development, database management, and user interface design. Proficiency with modern web development frameworks such as React, Node.js. Familiarity with cloud-based deployment and containerization technologies such as Docker is a plus.

  • Experience in developing and maintaining high-performance computing environments, including cloud computing platforms, specifically Azure and AWS. Knowledge of PHI and HIPAA regulations as they pertain to cloud computing is essential.

  • Experience with data management extraction from patient charts and Redcap and building databases that comply with PHI and HIPAA.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, background in genomics and a solid understanding of molecular biology principles.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Proven track record of scientific contributions including peer-reviewed publications.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively collaborate with research teams and mentor junior bioinformatics staff.

  • Strong presentation skills, with a proven ability to effectively convey complex bioinformatics concepts and results to collaborators from diverse backgrounds.

  • Requires successful completion of a background check.

  • The selected candidate may be requested to complete a pre-employment physical including a drug screen.
