Job Summary

The Department of Biostatistics is a very busy and diverse department focused on research and teaching. Our 70+ faculty are leaders in the development of statistical methods for clinical trials and observational studies, studies on the environment, computational biology, and genomics/genetics. We offer degree programs in biostatistics, computational biology and data science; currently, more than 200 students are enrolled in these programs.

Our team invites applications for a Biostatistician position in the BayesMendel group (https://projects.iq.harvard.edu/bayesmendel/ ). The position will be under the supervision of Principal Research Scientist, Dr. Danielle Braun. The research focus will be on cancer prevention, cancer screening, cancer risk prediction models, genetic epidemiology, clinical decision support tool development, and implementation studies evaluating the effectiveness of various intervections. Including the statistical analysis of cohort data and design and analysis of randomized control trials.


Position Description

The Biostatistician will work under nominal direction to perform a variety of research and quantitative statistical analysis tasks independently, and in support of the lab’s research programs. The ideal candidate has experience supporting complex scientific research programs involving multiple studies, grants, and collaborators.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conduct statistical analysis; apply statistical methods to answer a broad range of questions, write and lead manuscripts
  • Assist lab members in conducting specific research projects including but not limited to processing and curating data, conducting statistical analysis, literature review, and revising and editing manuscripts to respond to reviewer comments
  • Develop early-stage statistical research projects and assist in developing projects in collaboration with potential students and other collaborators
  • Develop statistical methods and software
  • Explore funding ideas and identify specific research gaps that funding proposals could address, and help support grant submissions
  • Lead individual and collaborative data analysis projects and conduct preliminary data analysis for funding proposals Serve as principal liaison to disseminate the group’s findings on specific research projects
  • Organize and schedule research meetings Help facilitate IRB and DUA submissions
  • Manage scientific research activities, including detailed to do lists, action items between the lab and funded collaborations with other labs (internal to Harvard and external)
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, or a closely-related field required
  • Experience in R required

Additional Qualifications and Skills

The following job-specific skills and competencies are preferred:

  • Master's degree biostatistics, statistics, epidemiology, or closely related field
  • Experience in statistics and completion of a master level biostatistics/statistics course curriculum
  • Experience in public health, environmental health, and providing research support in a high-profile environment with tact and diplomacy
  • Strong writing skills (for leading and participation in writing scientific publications) Experience with GitHub
  • Experience in Python
  • Solid working knowledge of office processes and related computer software (such as Microsoft Office and web-based applications) and electronic communications tools
  • Familiarity with Markdown, and experience with computing cluster environments
  • Experience with computing cluster environments, experience with R, python, and GitHub, experience running statistical analysis in R and python
  • Experience being a flexible team player
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Works well across teams in supporting a variety of projects and constituencies Experience working in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities Strong organizational skills

Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process.
