The Biosafety Specialist 1 (Environmental and Health Safety Specialist 1/EHS)  assists in maintaining organizational compliance with all applicable standards and guidelines set for by Biosafety Specialist (EHS) regulations. The EHS Specialist 1 provides expert technical consultation and assists with developing, implementing, coordinating, and maintaining a comprehensive safety program for all units of the University of Miami to ensure compliance with appropriate regulatory requirements for healthcare, research, and teaching laboratories (University of Miami and the University of Miami Health System).

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                           

  • Oversees, under limited supervision, the applicable EHS program(s), i.e., Laser Safety, Biological Safety, Haz Mat etc.

  • Assists in procedures to safeguard employees and surrounding communities and to ensure that all facilities are in compliance with regulations.

  • Conducts comprehensive EHS evaluations and ensures appropriate control measures are in place as well as approving alternate controls.

  • Ensures the minimization of risk related to non-compliance with regulations and policies governing the conduct of the applicable EHS program(s).

  • Delivers EHS education and training to any and all University of Miami faculty, staff, and students who work with or have potential for exposure to harmful agents.

  • Performs EHS audits and inspections in respect to current regulations and guidelines on scheduled intervals or more frequent as deemed necessary.

  • Investigates accidents occurring on University campuses, and assists with implementing and tracking corrective action plans.

  • Participates in emergency response procedures for incidents involving hazardous agents and materials, and responds to incidents as appropriate.

  • Maintains continuing EHS education in order to stay abreast of developments in the applicable environmental health and safety program.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field

Certification and Licensing:

Not Applicable

Experience:

Minimum 3 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form

  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions

  • Proficiency in computer software (i.e. Microsoft Office)

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

1. Participate in and assist in the annual lab inspection program.

2. Review research protocols to ensure appropriate risk mitigation, training of researchers, and compliance with applicable regulations.

3. Respond to biosafety inquiries.

4. Design posters, develop trainings, edit video, and participate in other creative endeavors in the development of biosafety resources.

5. Conduct biosafety related training, as needed.

6. Test safety equipment to ensure functionality, such as for fume hoods, safety showers, and eye washes.

7. Become a HAZWOPER 40 technician and achieve other safety credentials as identified.

8. Participate in incident response as occasions arise

.9. Provide biosafety support to institutional committees, departments and groups as necessary.

10. Support other EHS initiatives that require team response and/or participation.

11. Other duties relating to EHS support of the University as necessary.
