Position Summary

The division of medical informatics seeks highly motivated individuals with a passion for software development, scientific discovery, and improving healthcare. This position is responsible for developing and maintaining medical informatics applications to support the University of Kansas Medical Center. This includes developing/interacting with clinical systems (Ex. EPIC, Cerner), data warehouses and analytics, national terminology vocabularies (UMLS, RxNorm, LOINC, FDB), clinical research systems (Ex. VELOS), and external registries and state/national datasets.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Medical Informatics, Molecular Science and Nanotechnology or related field. Two years experience with the following: programming in at least one higher level language (C, C++, Java) and with scripting languages (Python, Ruby, Perl); developing in a LINUX/UNIX environment and working as part of a team using code management systems (such as Subversion, CVS, or GIT); and developing database driven applications (such as Oracle, MySQL, Postgres, MS SQLServer). Demonstrated ability with relational databases (MySQL, Postgres, Oracle) and accessing data using SQL. (or Bachelor’s degree and 5 years experience with the above technologies).

Under general supervision, formulates/defines specifications for complex software. Designs, codes, performs benchmark testing, debugging and documentation of programs. Performs programming in Java with Python scripting language. Develops in a LINUX/UNIX environment and works as part of a team using the code management system GIT. Develops database driven applications such as MySQL and Postgres. Works with relational databases such as MySQL, Postgres, and Oracle. Accesses data using SQL. Applications generally deal with original program development of support of locally developed programs, but with connectivity to institutional programs. Competent to work at the highest technical level on all phases of software systems programming applications.

May have responsibility for the evaluation of new and existing software products. May assist other programmers to effectively utilize the developed software, and as a member of a larger programming team. Develops or modifies moderately complex software. Produces clearly written, logical application code with minimal errors. Code must be easily extensible, following principles of object-oriented design where warranted. Adheres to internal software installation/backup. Adheres to quality and programming standards. Adheres to common design patterns. Includes clear documentation of application modifications and/or development activities as they occur. Ensures appropriate documentation for all development and modification. Provides full documentation of code, to include higher level block diagrams and functional level textual descriptions. Identifies complex logic area and documents the design tradeoffs and approach taken. Maintains, supports and administers informatics systems. Responsible for installing and configuring applications and libraries on informatics systems.

Provides administration of operating system in conjunction with other KUMC departments (Information Resources). Monitors and develops methods to automate monitoring of system interfaces. Ensures the integrity and security of institutional data. Follows change management procedures. Adheres to confidentiality and security policies and procedures. Tests and verifies the accuracy of data. Provides adequate security through identification of user types in conjunction with the user department. Performs design reviews and technical reviews when appropriate. Provides technical assistance to users.

Provides expert level support for problem determination and resolution. Communicates effectively and collaboratively with other workers and customers. Provides on call support during and after business hours. Maintains familiarity with emerging techniques and technologies related to current assignments. Develops and maintains documentation for all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and develops system user manuals related to the clinical information management system and its utilization. Develops interfaces to integrate third-party data with the system. Other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Medical Informatics or other supervisors.
