Position Summary:
Management of departmental stockroom and laboratories; maintains the operation of laboratories; and manages records of orders, receipts, and supplies. Specific duties include: ordering/receiving consumable supplies and maintaining needed inventories in teaching laboratories; securing bids and best prices for equipment, supplies, and services; maintaining equipment and making necessary repairs when possible; overseeing the proper storage and disposal of biological, chemical, and radioactive materials; maintenance of capital equipment and chemical inventories; moving equipment and setting up laboratories; understanding and monitoring safety conditions in the department; and overseeing maintenance contracts for major pieces of scientific equipment.
The ability to work independently with minimum supervision and direction is essential. As the position requires significant interaction with students, faculty, staff, and technical support people, good interpersonal skills are a must. The stockroom manager must be able to make independent judgements on the best ways to support the teaching and research missions of the department. Respect, courtesy, and collegiality are expected.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the facilities aspect of operation of teaching and research laboratories
  • Order/receive reagents, supplies and equipment for departmental instructional and research labs.
  • Maintain equipment and chemical inventories.
  • Perform minor repairs or organize outside repair of equipment.
  • Serve as system administrator for remote alarm system
  • Organize and maintain departmental stockroom
  • Supervise student workers to maintain inventory
  • Work with vendors to obtain best prices.
  • Maintain records and facilitate disposal of hazardous materials.
  • General service to the department activities
  • Organize routine preventative maintenance.
  • Be point person for departmental lab safety.
  • Be liaison between facilitate management and the department.
  • Work with chairperson to implement renovations and oversee departmental space and facilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS in Biology or related field or some college with appropriate work experience
  • At least two years or more working in a science or technical position, specifically with relevant hazard experience.
  • Working knowledge of general computer software: e.g., Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access), etc., as well as the ability to design and maintain associated documents/applications
  • Excellent critical thinking and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to summarize information and prepare accurate reporting information to entire department and university committees.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong knowledge of biology and biology safety. Working knowledge of and current certification in OSHA, DOT, and EPA regulations.
  • Working knowledge of biology, chemistry, and general science terminology.
  • Working knowledge of various laboratory equipment – able to maintain, service and instruct others in proper use

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
  • Can expect to occasionally lift boxes up to 50 pounds in weight, and transport gas cylinders / dewars using appropriate dollies.
  • There is a fair amount of walking within Mendel Science Center and possibly between campus buildings as needed.
